Visual appearance

Abyssal Scepter item.png Abyssal Scepter is especially powerful for melee champions and short-ranged casters, who are exceptional at close combat to the enemy and deal considerable amounts of magic damage. Considering this, the following list is a guideline about champions who should consider Abyssal Scepter item.png Abyssal Scepter as a relevant purchase option:

  • Abyssal Scepter item.png Abyssal Scepter is most effective to build during laning, if both you and your opponent are mainly dealing magic damage and you're looking for a defensive item without sacrificing damage, or as an option to increase your overall burst and duelling power.
  • As one of a few items granting flat magic penetration, Abyssal Scepter item.png Abyssal Scepter, coupled with other magic penetration items like Sorcerer's Shoes item.png Sorcerer's Shoes, can be used to exploit high base damage values.
  • Note that Abyssal's main treat, its flat magic penetration, is becoming increasingly less influential as your opponents start amassing magic resistance. This makes Abyssal Scepter item.png Abyssal Scepter a strategic choice, especially as it will either delay or even replace Void Staff item.png Void Staff. If you're not in possession of strong percentual life damage, you might be rendered useless against tanks later on.
  • With proper maneuvering Abyssal Scepter item.png Abyssal Scepter's aura debuff can be applied to the entire enemy team, securing kills for longer-ranged champions.
  • Unlike magic penetration, Abyssal Scepter item.png Abyssal Scepter's aura can result in a negative magic resistance, resulting in an effective damage buff.
  • The debuff also affects minions and monsters, except for the Dragon Dragon, Baron Nashor Baron Nashor and Vilemaw Vilemaw.
  • The icon indicating the debuff aura often appears before the enemy who carries it. If an enemy is standing in a nearby brush or just over a wall, the debuff icon may give them away even if they cannot be seen.
  • The aura will remain present even while using Zhonya's Hourglass item.png Zhonya's Hourglass.

Item effect compatibility

  • Sunfire Cape item.png Sunfire Cape - fully fits within aura range, nice item pair to greatly improve one's overall survivability and aoe damage output.
  • Hextech Gunblade item.png Hextech Gunblade - active part has range of 700 units. For best results, try to make sure that the missile hits a target within the aura radius, an applied slow also helps to keep target in aura range.
  • Thornmail item.png Thornmail - Most auto-attack reliant champions need to be in range of Abyssal Scepter to attack a champion using Thornmail item.png Thornmail. this means that both items are very good to use together, especially since Thornmail item.png Thornmail's passive deals magic damage. Keep in mind that both items do not offer HP, and most champions who want to build those items together are tanks. You need to be able to compensate this fact; for example, Cho'Gath Cho'Gath can compensate the lack of HP from both items with his Feast.png Feast.
