Development

Annie is voiced by Cristina Milizia^[1], whom also voices her in A Twist of Fate and Legends of Runeterra.^[2]
- Amumu and pre-rework Nunu are also voiced by the same voice actress.
- Annie's Japanese voice actor is Rie Kugimiya.^[3]
Annie & Tibbers' names respectively come from a Riot Games Inc. Gameplay Producer's girlfriend and her favorite teddy bear.
In the Founding Interns of League of Legends YouTube video uploaded by the Riot Games Channel, concept art for Annie was shown to depict her with green hair and an overall wildly different design.

Annie and her title of 'the Dark Child' draw inspiration from several sources:
- Annie derives from Hebrew חַנָּה Ħannāh, from Semitic noun Ħannat "grace",^[4]^[5] sharing root ħ-n-n "to be gracious" with Shauna Vayne & possibly Shyvana.
- The conflict between Annie & her step-mother Leanna parodies the Wicked Stepmother trope, though observers could empathize with Leanna's rancor at Annie, whom Leanna blamed for the deaths of Leanna's daughter Daisy & Annie's father Gregori.
- Annie & Tibbers may reference the folk-tale Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
- Her fire powers and bear-themed clothing might have been inspired by Frederica Tenjuin from Psyren.

Universe

Annie, the Dark Child

Tibbers was hand-crafted by Annie's mother, with the mythical Shadow Bears as a template, and is the only memento she has of her. She uses it as a focus for her pyromancy to bring Tibbers to life^[6] as opposed to the previous lore when he was just a Shadow Bear whom Annie herself enthralled.
Annie's stepmother is named Leanna and her stepsister is named Daisy just like the Sentinel Ivern summons. It is unknown if these two are related or not.
Tibbers' lost his button eye in the incident where Annie lost her step-sister, Daisy.
- While distracted by chasing after a fairie, Daisy fell in a rushing river despite Annie trying to warn her. Annie attempted to save her but Daisy was swept away in the current.
- It is most likely that Amoline drowned in the river she tried to draw water from, due to poor visibility in the middle of the night. It is stated that there is only one river near their home and considering that Annie and Daisy would not have been allowed to venture far from their house, it is most likely the same river that Daisy drowned in.
Her current appearance was due to an unknown adopted family that lived around the Ironspike Mountain regions of Noxus.
She is currently 9 years old.
It is implied that Annie's pyrokinetic magic passively shields her from the cold of winter, being perfectly fine in a short-sleeved dress. If she had to actively use her visible flames to keep warm, it is more likely that a "meanie" devoured by Tibbers that had stopped Annie on the road would have avoided antagonizing her in the first place.^[7]
ANNIE: Origins depicts Annie with brown hair, but Trouble states that she has "bright red" hair.
In modern pop culture, Hastur is an intimate name linked to a cosmic being of immense power known as the Yellow King in the Cthulhu Mythos.

Original Annie

She is the daughter of Gregori Hastur the Gray Warlock & Amoline the Shadow Witch.
When Annie was 8 years old, she enthralled a shadow bear from the Voodoo Lands, who would be known as Tibbers.

League of Legends

Annie was one of the first six champions designed (the others being Lee Sin, Singed, Sion, Sivir, and Twisted Fate).^[8]^[9]
Annie was the first champion to have 12 skins including Classic.
Annie is the second champion to have her ability icons remade with a Visual Update (the first being Katarina).
Summon Tibbers currently has the highest AP ratio in the game (515% with initial cast as well as all 45 ticks from Tibbers' aura).
Annie is the first fire-themed champion (the second being Brand).
In the now-removed official League of Legends forums, the original icon of Molten Shield was used to represent the "PVP.net Discussion" section.

Annie's jokes may be based on Ralph Wiggum's nonsensical manner of speech from The Simpsons.
▶️"What's your favorite aminal? A bear?" has her audibly and purposely mispronouncing 'animal'.
- Following his rework, Dr. Mundo makes the same intentional mispronunciation in one of his lines: ▶️"You in luck, aminal. Me also aminal doctor."
▶️"I'm rubber and you're... on fire!" references the first line of the popular children's rhyme 'I'm rubber, you're glue'.
▶️"Let's count to five!" references her passive Pyromania: after using four abilities, the fifth use will stun a target.
▶️"Eeny, meeny, miny, burn!" references the children's counting rhyme 'Eeny, meeny, miny, moe'.
- In the Latin American localization, it was changed to "¿Onta bebé?, aquí está. Fuego." ("Where's the baby? There he is. Fire.") referencing Diego from Ice Age.
  - In V3.10, it was changed yet again to "De tin marín de do, te quemé." ('De tin marín de do, I burned you') referencing the children's counting rhyme De tin marín de do pingüe...
▶️"Ashes, ashes, they all fall down" references the American version of the nursery rhyme Ring a Ring o' Roses.
- In the Latin American localization, V3.10 changed it to "Sol, solecito, quémense un poquito." ("Sun, sun, burns you a little bit.") partially referencing a children's song.
Annie shares quotes with:
- ▶️ ▶️ "This way."
▶️"Beaten by a little girl... ha!" may be referencing Dracula's statement when defeated by 12-year-old Maria in Castlevania: Rondo of Blood.
- In the Russian localization, it was replaced by "Буду жить, буду бить, всё равно тебе водить!" ("I will live, I will hit, still it's your turn to be it"), partially referencing the Russian counting rhyme Вышел месяц из тумана ("Moon appeared from the fog").
▶️"♪ Come out, come out, wherever you are! ♪" references The Wizard of Oz.

Original Annie

Her very first splash art was directly tweaked for the first splash art of her Goth skin.

Goth Annie

This skin shares the Goth theme with:

Goth Annie's appearance on the Digital Collector's Bundle art.

As one of the four Collector's Edition skins, she was only be obtainable through digital or retail Collector's Edition packs.^[10]
- She herself was obtainable through the Digital Collector's Edition pack.

  - Silver Kayle (Retail Collector's Edition)

  - At one point she was going to be bundled to celebrate her visual update, coupled with the fact the Collector's Edition was outdated. However, it never happened. As a result, she became the first skin sale to ever be denied to the public.
Her old Chinese artwork might have influenced her visual update.
- Her International Updated splash art was further updated to the Chinese version. Previously she had a much more grim expression where currently she has a more cheerful one. The Chinese edited version is a direct reference to the old Chinese splash art.
  - Her appearance on the art for the Digital Collector's Bundle in the Riot Store is the version prior to the edit.

Red Riding Annie

Annie in Wonderland

This skin shares the Storybook theme with:

She references Alice in Wonderland (Annie is dressed as the titular Alice and Tibbers as the White Rabbit).
This skin was a response to the player request to have Tibbers with a different appearance. It was classified as Legendary back when it was released, but features present in today's Legendary skins (modified ability particles, different emote or recall animation, new voiceover, etc.) are absent from this one.
- Recall effects were added with her VFX update.

FrankenTibbers Annie

This skin shares the Trick-or-Treat theme with:

She references the Bride of Frankenstein.
Tibbers' design is based upon the best-known Boris Karloff's incarnation of Frankenstein's monster, rather than the original book's description.^[11]

Reverse Annie

She is dressed in a Tibbers onesie and is carrying a doll in her own image, while Tibbers is dressed as her.
- The doll resembles the infamous Annabelle one.

Annie creating a circle of magic in the old Chinese artwork might be referencing Fairy Tail.

She was released in celebration of Lunar Revel 2013 (Year of the Snake) along with:
Tibbers strongly resembles the Panda King from Sly Cooper, who fights with Flame Kung-Fu ('Flame-Fu').
- Oddly and coincidentally enough, this skin was released four days after Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, the newest series entry in eight years.

Sweetheart Annie

This skin shares the Heartbreakers theme with:

She was released in celebration of Valentine's Day 2015 along with:

She resembles Shirley Temple.
Tibbers resembles one of the Care Bears.
- It's the first skin where Tibbers doesn't appear menacing, lacking sharp claws or exposed teeth.

Hextech Annie

She references BioShock with Tibbers being a Big Daddy and Annie being a Little Sister.
