A buff is any status effect given to a champion or a minion that gives them a beneficial boost in their performance. The opposite is called a debuff. Buffs can boost almost any attribute of a character, such as health, mana, damage, and ability power. Positive changes to champions or items in the Patch Notes can also be called buffs, while negative changes can be called nerfs.

Some buffs can stack a predetermined number of times while other buffs may not be stacked. This means that repeated applications of the buff to the same target will not grant him any increased effect but will only cause the buff duration to reset. Most buffs are temporary but some buffs may last indefinitely (such as  Tristana's  Draw a Bead boosting her attack range). Other buffs are lost upon champion death.

There are several sources for buffs in League of Legends, specifically abilities, epic monsters, fields, items, relics, speed shrines and summoner spells.

Ability buffs

These are either champion innates, champion abilities which increase stats when acquired with levels or champion abilities which trigger temporary effects. These abilities usually grow stronger with more ability power, attack damage, and/or levels.

Item buffs

These are buffs that come from the items you can buy from the shop in exchange for gold. Almost every item will boost one or several of your statistics by default, however there are additional effects on some. These come in the form of passive effects that boost your allies as well and are persistent as long as the item is not sold, called constant auras, or in the form of active effects that boost you and sometimes your team mates significantly for a short period of time and have a cooldown attached to them, called active auras.

Monster buffs

These are temporary buffs acquired by slaying jungle monsters. For example, the  Ancient Golem grants the Crest of the Ancient Golem buff. In this case, the monster usually has swirling colored runes around it. Other monsters, specifically  Baron Nashor and  Vilemaw, grant a powerful buff to the entire killing team.

Summoner spell buffs

These are temporary buffs acquired by using summoner spells.

Neutral buffs

Summoner's Rift

Buff Name Effect
Crest of the Ancient Golem Increases Mana regeneration per 5 by 25, and regenerates 1% of their max mana a second. Additionally, champions also receive 10% cooldown reduction.
Blessing of the Lizard Elder All basic attacks will slow the target by 8 / 16 / 24% (5 / 10 / 15% for ranged attacks) and deal 8 + (2 × level) true damage.
Exalted with Baron Nashor All Champions on the team that kills  Baron Nashor will receive this buff, which gives 40 attack damage/ability power, increase health regeneration by 3% of their max health, and increase mana regeneration by 1% of their max mana.

Twisted Treeline

Buff Name Effect
Crest of Crushing Wrath All Champions on the team that kills  Vilemaw will receive this buff, which gives bonus health and mana regeneration, increased attack speed and bonus cooldown reduction.
Ghost Relic 20% Movement Speed (decays over time), instantly restore health, mana, energy and fury.
No Altars Bonus mana regeneration
One Altar Bonus mana regeneration and bonus gold per kill
Two Altars Bonus mana regeneration, bonus gold per kill and 10% increased attack damage and ability power

Crystal Scar

Buff Name Effect
Crystal Scar's Aura Mana or energy regeneration, experience over time.
Storm Shield Increases the size of the champion, and gives the wearer 212.5 +(12.5 x level) shield, which recharges if they have not taken any damage for 10 seconds. Additionally, this shield deals 90 +(10 x level) magic damage every 4 seconds to targets they hit with basic attacks.
Mark of the Conqueror Increases damage dealt by 10%.

Crystal Scar's Aura Mana or energy regeneration, experience over time.

Summoner Spells

Spell Buff
Cleanse Removes all crowd control effects and lowers the duration of incoming ones by 65% for 3 seconds.
Ghost Ignores unit collision and increases movement speed by 27% for 10 seconds.
Heal Heals the caster and the target nearest to the cursor (prioritizes the most wounded allied champion if no allied champions are near the cursor) for 95-475 health (depending on level) and subsequently cleanses both of healing reduction effects, also granting +30% movement speed for 2 seconds.
Revive Revives your champion, and increases movement speed by 125%, which decays over 12 seconds.
Garrison (Dominion only) Allied turrets around the caster are given increased regeneration and attack speed for 8 seconds. Enemy turrets are given 80% reduced damage for 8 seconds.
