The Darkin known as Aatrox

The Darkin are a collection of sentient weapons, of which only five remain. Only three are known to history, including The Darkin Blade.

History

The origins of the Darkin, and any history pertaining to their creation is unknown. It is likewise unknown if Aatrox is a manifestation of The Darkin Blade, or a host of the Blade's power, since it is the Blade that is considered to be Darkin. The entity known as Aatrox is known for appearing in wars waged by humans, coming forth when victory seemed assured for one side, only to turn the tables with a few words and an unknown power which inspires a monstrous bloodlust in people. His influence in historical conflicts spans thousands of years, with his oldest known appearance being in a battle between the Protectorate & Magelords. He has also appeared in Ancient Shurima, Ionia, Noxus, Demacia and more recently Freljord. His work earned him dedicated devotees from various factions across history, being heralded as a hero to many of them, but he disappears as quickly as he comes, giving no indication to his true purpose.

Trivia

• It is currently unknown if 'Aatrox' is the name of the blade or the being holding the blade, or even if the two are (or ever were) distinct.
  • It is known in-universe that Darkin are sentient weapons, and not a fact known only to the readers.
• The two factions within Aatrox's lore, the Protectorate and the Magelords, are highly likely to be the two factions represented on Summoner's Rift.
  • A stone mural can be seen along the north edge of the map that depicts two factions surrounding a crystal, with a small carving of Aatrox visible to the left.
• With Aatrox's release, it was believed that the Darkin were a race of demon-like beings. However, in Xayah and Rakan's teaser it was revealed that the Darkin were actually sentient weapons.
  • Based on the previous belief, it was speculated that Kayle and Morgana might be the two known-to-history Darkin that are yet not identified to players. This was supported by their similar appearance as well as the promise that their out-dated and non-canonical lore would be updated in the future to something more in-universe.
    • Incidentally, the same reveal posed a possible new classification for Kayle and Morgana as Vastaya, instead.
  • Based on the new description of the Darkin as sentient weapons, it's possible that Varus' Bow is one of the Darkin. This fits the existing lore surrounding the weapon, as well as similarities between Varus' partially corrupted form and Aatrox's "fully corrupted" appearance. This assumes that Aatrox is a host of the Darkin Blade, however.
