- "I am become death" is a reference to a famous qoute by J. Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist who created the Atomic bomb. Oppenheimer was quoting Vishnu from the Hindu Epic, the Bhagavad Gita. However, this was a miquote. The direct translation is "I am all-powerful Time which destroys all things, and I have come here to slay these men."
- His joke "What's the incantation again... yes, erm... oh, right, R!" is a community meme joke where Karthus' ultimate is stated as "Press R to win"
- His joke "I'm putting your name in my little black necronomicon." is a possible, but unlikely, reference to the Death Note series, while it also relates to the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
- His joke "Do you have a moment to talk about death?" is a reference to the meme Excuse Me Sir, Do You Have a Moment to Talk About Jesus Christ? (which is a common stereotyped expression of Christian missionaries, particularly Jehovah's Witnesses)
- His quote "You can't kill the metal!" is a reference to the song "The Metal" by Tenacious D.

- When he dances, you can hear an eagle's scream. This currently seems to be a global sound effect (starting with patch 5.11), heard by all allies, and the enemy team if you are not in the fog of war. It is unknown whether this is a bug or by intent, as his eagle scream originally had the same sound rolloff distance as his laugh and other effects.
