Maokai draws energy from spells cast in his vicinity, gaining a charge whenever a nearby champion or himself uses an ability (stacks up to 5 times)

Upon reaching 5 charges, Maokai's next basic attack consumes them all to heal him for 5 / 6 / 7% maximum health.

Ability Details
Sap Magic is an on-hit effect.
  • The enhaced attack will apply other on-hit effects and can Critical strike icon critically strike as normal.
  • Sap Magic can be Counter Strike.png dodged and/or miss if Maokai is Blind icon blinded (but will not be consumed) but cannot be Riposte.png parried or Aegis Protection.png blocked (the enhanced attack will be)
  • Sap Magic will not be consumed if Maokai is at full health or if it is used on structures.

Additional Information:

  • Maokai can gain stacks from nearby enemy champions he has no Sight icon sight of.
  • Sap Magic only gains one charge from multi-hit abilities (Spirit Rush.png Spirit Rush, Broken Wings.png Broken Wings)

Arcane Smash

Arcane Smash

Active: Maokai releases an arcane shockwave that travels forth in a line, dealing magic damage to all enemies it passes through and Slow icon slowing them for 1.5 seconds. Enemies near Maokai are also Airborne icon knocked back.

  • Magic Damage: 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+ 40% AP)
  • Slow: 20 / 27 / 34 / 41 / 48%

Arcane Smash is a linear, pass-through skillshot with a point-blank, area-of-effect component.

Twisted Advance
RANGE: 525
COST: 75 Mana
COOLDOWN: 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 / 9
Twisted Advance

Active: Maokai dashes to the target enemy, becoming untargetable for the duration, dealing them magic damage on arrival (capped at 300 against minions and monsters) and briefly Root icon rooting them.

  • Magic Damage: 9 / 10 / 11 / 12 / 13% (+ 3% per 100 AP) of target's maximum health
  • Root Duration: 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2
Ability Details
Twisted Advance is a single-targeted dash.

Additional Information:

  • Twisted Advance will cancel mid-dash if Maokai's target dies or becomes untargetable.
  • Maokai will continue to chase his target even if he loses sight of them (if he does, sometimes a visual bug will occur where Maokai freezes mid-dash, but he will still reach them and root them)
  • Maokai will follow any dash or blink except Recall.png Recall, Teleport.png Teleport, Paranoia.png Paranoia, Gate.png Gate, and Stand United.png Stand United.
  • Becoming untargetable during Twisted Advance will prevent Maokai from being hit by non-targeted abilities (Flame Chompers!.png Flame Chompers!, Requiem.png Requiem) as well as stop turrets and non-champion units from targeting him.
  • Possible Bug: Maokai can interact with Dark Passage.png Dark Passage while untargetable, allowing him to root targets near Thresh Thresh.

Sapling Toss
RANGE: 1100 / 175 / 350 / 250
SPEED: 450 (+ bonus movement speed)
COST: 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 Mana
Sapling Toss

Active: Maokai flings a Sapling to the target location that remains there, granting Sight icon sight around it.

  • Sapling Duration: 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60

Upon spotting an enemy, the Sapling chases them for up to 2.5 seconds, exploding upon impact or at the end of its duration, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies upon detonation and Slow icon slowing them by 50% for 1 second.

  • Magic Damage: 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 60% AP)
Ability Details
Sapling Toss is a ground-targeted area of effect with a summon component.

Additional Information:

  • Sapling Toss grants Sight icon sight of the target location even while the Sapling in flight.
  • Unlike Volatile Spiderling.png Volatile Spiderling the Saplings will continue to chase their target even if they lose Sight icon sight of them (but they do not prioritize champions so they will chase the first target they encounter)
  • Saplings will appear on the map as minions despite being untargetable and invulnerable.
  • Saplings cannot stack on top of each other (they will move a short distance away from one another if they are aimed at the same location)

Vengeful Maelstrom
RANGE: 475
COST: 40 Mana + 30 Mana Per Second
COOLDOWN: 60 / 50 / 40
Vengeful Maelstrom

Active: Maokai creates a magical vortex around himself for up to 10 seconds, reducing non-turret damage dealt to himself and allies in the vortex by 20% for the duration and storing double the amount absorbed, capping at Vengeful Maelstrom's base damage.

At the end of its duration or upon reactivating Vengeful Maelstrom, Maokai detonates the vortex, dealing magic damage to all nearby enemies.

Vengeful Maelstrom is a self-targeted area of effect.

Additional Information:

  • Vengeful Maelstrom will toggle off automatically if Maokai cannot afford the mana cost to upkeep it or if he dies during it.
  • Vengeful Maelstrom's damage reduction is calculated after armor and magic resistance (does not reduce true damage)
