NOTE: Not to be confused with spell effects, which are additional effects that occur when an ability lands.

On-hit effects are effects that trigger on a champion's autoattacks and a select few abilities. An autoattack or ability that applies on-hit effects can apply any number of these effects at once.

Critical Strikes

Critical strike is not considered an on-hit effect. A few select abilities can critically strike (Alpha Strike.png Alpha Strike, Steel Tempest.png Steel Tempest, Parrrley.png Parrrley and Judgment.png Judgment), but this should not be mistaken for standard functionality.

In almost all cases, the attack that triggers an on-hit effects may still critically strike and apply life steal. Also in most cases, critically striking will not affect the damage of the on-hit effect, unless explicitly said otherwise, such as Statikk Shiv item.png Statikk Shiv.

Lifesteal

Life steal is an offensive stat that converts a percentage of the physical damage dealt by a champion's basic attack or ability that applies on-hit effects to health regained. For the main article, see life steal.

Life steal applies to all physical damage dealt on-hit, including any sourced from on-hit effects (with a few exceptions). Sheen item.png Sheen and NasusSquare.png Nasus's Siphoning Strike.png Siphoning Strike is a renowned example of powerful sustain as life steal not only applies to the basic damage on the attack, but the bonus damage on Sheen and the stacked damage on Siphoning Strike.

Life steal is calculated from the actual damage done to an enemy after armor and all other forms of damage reduction. Almost all champions have 0% base life steal. It can be increased with items, runes, masteries, and some champion abilities.

Damage dealt to enemies beyond your target through splash damage will not apply life steal. That is unless the damaging effect specifically states that on-hit effects will apply to all enemies damaged (such as Ravenous Hydra item.png Ravenous Hydra and Rat-Ta-Tat-Tat.png Rat-Ta-Tat-Tat).

While blinded, an attacker will not cause any on-hit damage. In most cases, non-damaging effects will still occur. Also in most cases, most one-use abilities will not be consumed until the attacker successfully lands an attack.

The following Champion abilities inflict Blind on an opponent:

Abilities that apply on-hit effects

The following abilities will apply on-hit effects instead of spell effects. Any ability not listed here will apply spell effects, regardless of how similar it may be to the abilities on this list or how similar to effect resembles a basic attack.

Pets that apply on-hit effects

  • ShacoSquare.png Shaco's Hallucinate.png Hallucinate
    • Deals 75% of Shaco's attack damage, and any cloned on-hit effects at full damage. The clones attacks can critically strike and any life steal will heal itself.
  • YorickSquare.png Yorick's Omen of Death.png Omen of Death
    • Deals 45 / 60 / 75 % of Yorick's attack damage, and any copied on-hit effects at full damage but the clone's attacks can critically strike but it won't trigger life steal.
  • MordekaiserSquare.png Mordekaiser's Children of the Grave.png Children of the Grave
    • Deals magic damage equal to the target's base AD at level 1 + 100% of the target's bonus AD + 75% of Mordekaiser's AD (not including the 20% increase from Children of the Grave). It will apply any cloned on-hit effects sourced from items but not those sourced from champion abilities. Despite not applying spell effects, it will generate shield through. The clone's attacks can critically strike but it won't trigger life steal.
  • LeBlancSquare.png LeBlanc's Mirror Image.png Mirror Image
    • Deals 0% of LeBlanc's attack damage but will apply any cloned on-hit effects at full damage. Whether or not the mirror image can critically strike or trigger life steal is irrelevant as it has no basic attack damage unless you equip Statikk Shiv item.png Statikk Shiv.

The damage dealt by these effects will apply life steal unless otherwise stated.

Non-Physical Damage

These abilities will not incur any healing. In all cases, the triggering attack will still apply life steal.

Damage Over Time

These abilities will not incur any healing. In all cases, the triggering attack will apply life steal.

Splash Damage

The damage dealt to enemies other than the original target will not trigger on-hit effects or spell-effects. If the attack misses or is blocked, the effect will not trigger.

Exceptions

The following "on-hit effects" are classified as abilities and will trigger spell effects, rather than on-hit effects. It is unknown of this behaviour is an oversight or intentional as they are visually identical to the on-hit effects of other champions. The triggering attack will still trigger on-hit effects.

Misnomers

Pets

Pets have a complicated relationship with on-hit effects and spell effects. For the full article, see pets.

  • Any damage dealt by a pet that isn't its basic attacks will apply spell effects.
  • If its basic attacks deal damage based on its AD (regardless of whether the damage is physical or magical), it will trigger any on-hit effects that it is in possession of. It will not trigger the on-hit effects of its owner and it will not trigger spell effects at all.
  • If its basic attacks deal damage based on its AP (regardless of whether the damage is physical or magical), it will trigger its owner's spell effects. It will not trigger on-hit effects (its own or its owner's).
  • ShacoSquare.png Shaco's Jack In The Box.png Jack In The Box is the only exception, although this is likely due to how old the champion is. The box's attacks will trigger spell effects, and despite having attack damage it deals damage based on an unseen statistic.

On-Attack Effects/Auto-attack Modifiers

The following effects occur when your champion attacks or modifies your champion's basic attacks to behave differently. These effects are not triggered "on-hit", and will still occur even if the attack is dodged or blocked, or the attacker is blinded. On-attack effects consistently apply spell effects unless stated otherwise, with one exception.

  • The Black Cleaver item.png The Black Cleaver: Dealing physical damage to an enemy champion reduces their armor by 5% for 4 seconds. This effect stacks up to 5 times. 3000 gold.
  • Blade of the Ruined King item.png Blade of the Ruined King: Unique passive: Your attacks deal 8% of the target's current health in physical damage (60 max vs. minions and monsters). 3200 gold.
  • Essence Reaver item.png Essence Reaver: Unique Passive: Your basic attacks restore mana equal to between 2% and 8% of the physical damage dealt, based on your missing mana. 3200 gold.
  • Entropy item.png Entropy: UNIQUE Passive - Rage: basic attacks grant 20 movement speed for 2 seconds on hit. Minion, monster, and champion kills grant 60 movement speed for 2 seconds 2700 gold.
  • Executioner's Calling item.png Executioner's Calling: Unique passive: On hit, target suffers Grievous Wounds for 1.5 seconds. 1900 gold.
  • Feral Flare item.png Feral Flare: Unique passive - Maim: Basic attacks on hit deal 25 (+1 per Feral stack) bonus magic damage and restore 10 health. Minions and monsters take triple the bonus magic damage. 1800 (Cannot be bought, 30 large monsters killed with at least a Hunter's Machete item.png Hunter's Machete) gold.
  • Frozen Mallet item.png Frozen Mallet: Unique passive: On hit, target is slowed by 40% (30% if ranged attack) for 1.5 seconds. 3300 gold.
  • Furor item.png Furor: Unique - Furor: Whenever you deal damage with a single target attack or spell, you gain 12% movement speed that decays over 2 seconds. 475g gold.
  • Grez's Spectral Lantern item.png Grez's Spectral Lantern: Unique: Your basic attacks against minions and monsters have a 20% chance to deal 200 bonus magic damage. 1350 gold.
  • Hextech Gunblade item.png Hextech Gunblade: Unique - Reload: Your basic attacks and single target spells against champions reduce the cooldown of this item by 3 seconds. 3400 gold.
  • The Lightbringer item.png The Lightbringer: Unique - Vanquish: Basic attacks have a 20% chance to deal 100 bonus magic damage. Effect doubled for non-champions. 2200 gold.
  • Madred's Razors item.png Madred's Razors: Unique - Maim: Your basic attacks against monsters deal 50 bonus magic damage and restore 8 health on hit. 750 gold.
  • Muramana item.png Muramana: Toggle: Single target spells and attacks (on hit) consume 3% of current Mana to deal bonus physical damage equal to twice the amount of Mana consumed. 2100 (Cannot be bought, 750 stacks on Manamune item.png Manamune) gold.
  • Nashor's Tooth item.png Nashor's Tooth: Unique: Basic attacks deal 15 (+15% AP) bonus magic damage on hit. 2920 gold.
  • Phage item.png Phage: Unique Passive - Rage: Basic attacks grant 20 movement speed for 2 seconds on hit. Minion, monster, and champion kills grant 60 movement speed for 2 seconds. The movement speed bonus is halved for ranged champions. 1325 gold.
  • Ravenous Hydra item.png Ravenous Hydra: Unique – Cleave (Melee only): Your attacks deal physical damage up to 60% of your Attack Damage to units around your target, decaying down to 20% near the edge. 3300 gold.
  • Sanguine Blade item.png Sanguine Blade: Unique passive: On hit, you gain +6 attack damage and +1% life steal for 4 seconds (maximum 5 stacks). 2275 gold.
  • Spirit of the Elder Lizard item.png Spirit of the Elder Lizard: Unique - Incinerate: Deals an additional 14 + (2 × level) bonus true damage over 3 seconds upon dealing physical damage. 2000 gold.
  • Tiamat item.png Tiamat: Unique – Cleave (Melee only): Your attacks deal physical damage up to 60% of your Attack Damage to units around your target, decaying down to 20% near the edge. 1900 gold.
  • Trinity Force item.png Trinity Force: Unique Passive - Rage: Basic attacks grant 20 movement speed for 2 seconds on hit. Minion, monster, and champion kills grant 60 movement speed for 2 seconds. The movement speed bonus is halved for ranged champions. 3703 gold.
  • Wit's End item.png Wit's End: Unique: On-hit, you deal 42 magic damage and steal 5 magic resistance from your target (stacking up to 5 times). 2400 gold.
  • Wriggle's Lantern item.png Wriggle's Lantern: Unique Passive - Maim: Basic attacks against monsters deal 75 bonus magic damage and restore 10 health on hit. 1800 gold.

A few items have on-hit effects that require being activated:

  • Entropy item.png Entropy: Unique: For 5 seconds, your attacks reduce your target's movement speed by 30% and deal 80 true damage over 2.5 seconds - (60 second cooldown). 2700 gold. (the activation of Entropy counts as casting an ability, and so will trigger effects like Sheen item.png Sheen)
  • Iceborn Gauntlet item.png Iceborn Gauntlet: Unique Passive - Spellblade: After using an ability, your next basic attack deals bonus physical damage equal to 125% of your base attack damage to surrounding enemies and creates a field for 2 seconds that slows enemies inside by 30% - (2 second cooldown). 2900 gold.
  • Lich Bane item.png Lich Bane: Unique – Spellblade: After using an ability, your next basic attack deals 75% base AD (+ 50% AP) bonus magic damage - (2 second cooldown). 3000 gold.
  • Sheen item.png Sheen: Unique Passive - Spellblade: After using an ability, your next basic attack deals 100% base AD bonus physical damage - (2 second cooldown). 1200 gold.
  • Statikk Shiv item.png Statikk Shiv: Unique Passive - Moving and attacking builds Static Charges. At 100 charges, your next attack expends the charges to deal 100 magic damage to up to 4 targets. This damage can critically strike. 2500 gold.
  • Trinity Force item.png Trinity Force: Unique Passive - Spellblade: After using an ability, your next basic attack deals 200% base AD bonus physical damage - (2 second cooldown). 3703 gold.

On-Attack Effects

The following effects occur when your champion attacks, rather than when the attack hits. They will trigger even if the attack is blocked or dodged, or if the attacker is blinded.

  • Guinsoo's Rageblade item.png Guinsoo's Rageblade: Passive: Your basic attacks or spellcasts grant you 4% attack speed and 4 ability power for 8 seconds. This bonus stacks up to 8 times. 2600 gold.
  • Manamune item.png Manamune: Unique - Mana Charge: Grants +4 / 8 maximum mana (max. +750 mana) for each basic attack, spell cast, and mana expenditure (occurs up to 2 times every 8 / 6 seconds).

Transforms into Muramana item.png Muramana at +750 mana. 2100 gold.

  • Runaan's Hurricane item.png Runaan's Hurricane: Unique: On-attack you fire minor bolts at 2 nearby targets, each dealing 10 + 50% of your attack damage and applying on-hit effects. 2400 gold.
  • Wit's End item.png Wit's End: Unique: On-attack you steal 5 magic resistance from the target for 5 seconds, stacking up to 5 times. 2400 gold.

On Being Hit

A few other items trigger an effect on being hit by an enemy champion instead:

  • Doran's Shield item.png Doran's Shield: Unique Passive: Blocks 8 damage from champion basic attacks. 440 gold.
  • Hexdrinker item.png Hexdrinker: Unique - Lifeline: Upon taking magic damage that would reduce health below 30%, grants a shield that absorbs 250 magic damage for 5 seconds - (90 second cooldown). 1350 gold.
  • Maw of Malmortius item.png Maw of Malmortius: Unique - Lifeline: Upon taking magic damage that would reduce health below 30%, grants a shield that absorbs 400 magic damage for 5 seconds - (90 second cooldown). 3200 gold.
  • Ninja Tabi item.png Ninja Tabi: Unique Passive: Blocks 10% of the damage from basic attacks. 1000 gold.
  • Quill Coat item.png Quill Coat: Unique - Sapping Barbs: You gain 40 HP/5 and 30 MP/5 for 5 seconds whenever you take damage from a monster. Additionally, monsters who attack you bleed for 5% of their maximum health over 3 seconds (maximum 150 damage). Sapping Barbs cannot deal lethal damage. 700 gold.
  • Randuin's Omen item.png Randuin's Omen: Unique Passive – Cold Steel: If you are hit by a basic attack, you slow the attacker's attack speed by 10%. 3000 gold.
  • Spirit of the Ancient Golem item.png Spirit of the Ancient Golem: Unique - Sapping Barbs: You gain 60 HP/5 and 45 MP/5 for 5 seconds whenever you take damage from a monster. Additionally, monsters who attack you bleed for 5% of their maximum health over 3 seconds (maximum 150 damage). Sapping Barbs cannot deal lethal damage. 2000 gold.
  • Thornmail item.png Thornmail: Unique Passive: On being hit, returns 30% of damage, before any reductions such as armor, as magic damage. 2200 gold.
  • Warden's Mail item.png Warden's Mail: Unique – Cold Steel: If you are hit by a basic attack, you slow the attacker's attack speed by 15% for 1 seconds. 1000 gold.

Notes

  • Blind mitigates all basic attacks attempted while blinded, including their on-hit effects.
  • Life steal restores health based on physical damage dealt to your target with basic attacks, abilities that apply on-hit effects, and abilities that modify your next basic attack.
  • The Black Cleaver item.png The Black Cleaver applies to all physical damage sourced from the holder, including on-hit effects.
  • Morellonomicon item.png Morellonomicon applies to all magical damage sourced from the holder, including on-hit effects.
