With the Season 3 HUD Shop Update, recommended items configuration files now use a JSON format over the old INI format. Some experience with the JSON format is recommended before manually changing recommended items. For most users, the use of a third-party tool is recommended.

A number of third-party tools exist to greatly simplify and automate the process of changing recommended items.

Customizing recommended items Edit
To create a new item file, you will first need a few pieces of information:
- The Champion's internal key, which is the Champion's name without spaces or punctuation. The one exception to the rule is Wukong, whose internal key is "MonkeyKing".
- The map ID (found below)
- The game mode ID (found below)
- The item IDs (A list of the new item IDs can be found in this post)
Start by creating a plain text file and name it whatever you with the extension ".json". There is no convention for naming files as the game will load all files ending in ".json".
Compared to the old method of changing recommended items, the new files are not placed deep within the game's files. Instead, they are placed in the following path:
\League of Legends\Config\Champions\[CHAMPION KEY]\Recommended\
Replacing "[CHAMPION KEY]" with the Champion's key (mentioned above) and creating any folders that do not already exist.

The contents of the item files must strictly adhere to the format in the following example, the Riot defaults for Ahri (each key is explained after the example):

Important keys explained:
"champion":"[CHAMPION KEY]"
Used only for organizational purposes, it defines the Champion for which the item file is created. [CHAMPION KEY] should be replaced with the Champion's key.
"title":"[TITLE]"
Used only for organizational purposes, it defines the title of the item build. [TITLE] should be replaced with your title.
"type":"[TYPE]"
Used only for organizational purposes, it defines the type of item build.
Important: [TYPE] should be replaced with anything EXCEPT "riot".

Defines the map the item build is used on. [MAP ID] should be replaced with one of the following map IDs:
- Any map: "any"
- Summoner's Rift: "1"
- Crystal Scar: "8"
- Twisted Treeline: "10"
- Howling Abyss: "12"
"mode":"[MODE ID]"
Defines the mode on which the item build is used. [MODE ID] should be replaced with one of the following mode IDs:
- Any mode: "any"
- Classic mode: "CLASSIC"
- Dominion mode: "ODIN"
- ARAM mode: "ARAM"
"priority":true
Defines if the item set should be loaded with the highest priority (used in-game) and should always be set to true. If you are creating multiple builds for a single map/mode, the build you want to use should be set to true while the rest should be set to false.
"blocks":[ ]
Creates a list of item groups, or "blocks", the defaults being named "Starting", "Essential", "Offensive", "Defensive" and "Consumables". You can create any number of blocks you wish, and blocks should be separated by commas.

Defines the name of the block. You can replace [BLOCK NAME] with whatever you wish, however using the values "starting", "essential", "offensive", and "defensive" will result in localized versions being used in-game.
"items":[ ]
Creates a list of items to appear in the item group or block. You can add as many items as you wish, and items should be separated by commas.

"count":[ITEM COUNT]
The number of items that are purchased when selecting and buying the recommended items. For example, clicking on and buying a health potion with a count of 3 will result in buying 3 health potions.
List of item codes Edit
Below are the item codes as posted on the forums. They correspond to Riot's item pages. Some of these items are not available or replaced on Dominion, but some of them are currently only available on Dominion and can not be bought on regular Classic's Summoner's Rift or Twisted Treeline.
The items below have been removed entirely from the store.
