Shield refers to the game mechanic which grants temporary health to a champion for some time. These shields absorb a set amount of damage before it disappears, whether because it reached its capacity of damage absorption or because its duration ran out. It is marked by an extra white bar in the champion's health bar.

Most of these shields are granted by champion abilities.

Shield types

Shields are classified by the type of damage they absorb. Most of them absorb all types of damage, including true damage. Magic shields absorb only magic damage. They appear purple instead of the normal white, and champions with magic shields take direct damage to their health from physical and true damage.

All shields take the champion's resistances into account when receiving damage to the temporary health.

Spell shields, which allow you to completely block the effect of one single ability, are not considered a type of shield.

Some "shields" such as Leona Leona's Eclipse.png Eclipse grant armor, magic resistance or damage reduction when activated, but as these don't give any "temporary health" they are not considered shields.

Champion abilities that can shield others

  • Janna Janna's Eye of the Storm.png Eye of the Storm shields her target for 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 70% AP) damage for up to 5 seconds.
  • Karma Karma's Inspire.png Inspire shields her target for 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 / 200 (+ 50% AP) damage for up to 4 seconds.
    • Defiance.png Defiance shields her target for 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 / 200 (+ 110% AP) + (30 / 100 / 170 / 240, scaling with Mantra.png Mantra) damage and allied champions near the primary target for half the total amount for up to 4 seconds.
  • Lee Sin Lee Sin's Safeguard.png Safeguard rushes him towards a target ally unit, shielding him from 40 / 100 / 160 / 220 / 280 (+ 80% AP) damage for the next 2 seconds. If the target ally was a champion, they also receive this shield.
  • Lulu Lulu's Help, Pix!.png Help, Pix! summons Pix and shields target ally champion for 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 60% AP) damage for up to 6 seconds.
  • Lux Lux's Prismatic Barrier.png Prismatic Barrier shields herself and throws out her wand in a line, shielding allied champions in its path for 50 / 65 / 80 / 95 / 110 (+ 20% AP) for up to 3 seconds. Lux's wand then returns to her, stacking the shield to all allied champions it passes through and herself.
  • Orianna Orianna's Command- Protect.png Command: Protect commands her ball to fly to and attach onto an allied champion shielding it for 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 40% AP) damage when it arrives for up to 4 seconds.
  • Sona Sona's Aria of Perseverance.png Aria of Perseverance activates an aura that applies to all tagged allied champions a shield that absorbs 30 / 55 / 80 / 105 / 130 (+ 30% AP) damage for up to 1.5 seconds.
  • Shen Shen's Stand United.png Stand United shields an allied champion for 250 / 550 / 850 (+ 130% AP) damage for up to 5 seconds.
  • Taric Taric's Bastion.png Bastion shields himself and a target allied champion for 8 / 9 / 10 / 11 / 12% of target's maximum health damage for up to 2.5 seconds.
  • Thresh Thresh's Dark Passage.png Dark Passage tosses his lantern towards the target location for up to 6 seconds. The first ally who comes near the lantern gains a shield lasting 4 seconds that that absorbs up to 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 1 per Damnation.png soul collected) damage.

Champion abilities that shield only the user

  • Blitzcrank Blitzcrank's Mana Barrier.png Mana Barrier creates a shield to protect him for damage equal to 50% of his current mana for up to 10 seconds. This happens when his health falls below 20% of his maximum health and has a static cooldown of 90 seconds after it activates for it to be available again.
  • Diana Diana's Pale Cascade.png Pale Cascade shields herself from up to 40 / 55 / 70 / 85 / 100 (+ 30% AP) damage or for 5 seconds. If all three spheres are triggered, the shield is reapplied. The second shield stacks with the first.
  • Evelynn Evelynn's Agony's Embrace.png Agony's Embrace shields herself from up to 150 / 225 / 300 per enemy champion that is hit and lasts up to 6 seconds.
  • Jarvan IV Jarvan IV's Golden Aegis.png Golden Aegis shields himself from up to 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 damage plus 20 / 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 damage per nearby enemy champion for up to 5 seconds.
  • Malphite Malphite's Granite Shield.png Granite Shield passively shields him with a layer of rock which absorbs damage equal to 10% of his maximum health. If Malphite has not been hit for 10 / 8 / 6 seconds, this effect recharges.
  • Mordekaiser Mordekaiser's Iron Man.png Iron Man passively gives him a temporary shield equal to 25% of the damage dealt from his abilities, halved to 12.5% against enemy minions and capped at 25% maximum health. After a 1.5 seconds delay, Iron Man's shield decays at a rate of 1.5% base health per second down to a minimum of 25% maximum shield.
  • Nautilus Nautilus's Titan's Wrath.png Titan's Wrath shields himself from 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 (+ 9 / 11 / 13 / 15 / 17% of maximum health) damage for up to 10 seconds.
  • Riven Riven's Valor.png Valor dashes her towards the cursor and grants her a shield protecting her from 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 / 210 (+ 100% bonus AD) damage for up to 1.5 seconds.
  • Rumble Rumble's Scrap Shield.png Scrap Shield creates a shield protecting from 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 (+ 40% AP) damage for up to 2 seconds. If he has 50 or more heat when casting it, the shield is increased to 75 / 120 / 165 / 210 / 255 (+ 60% AP).
  • Shen Shen's Ki Barrier.png Ki Barrier shields him for 52 - 120 (based on level) (+ 14% bonus health) damage for up to 2.5 seconds each time he casts an ability with a static cooldown of 10 seconds. If the triggering ability successfully affected at least one champion, Ki Barrier's cooldown is reduced by 4 - 7.5 (based on level) seconds.
  • Sion Sion's Soul Furnace.png Soul Furnace surrounds himself with a shield which absorbs 30 / 55 / 80 / 105 / 130 (+ 40% AP) (+ 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10% of maximum health) damage for up to 6 seconds. You can deactivate it after 3 seconds or it will destroy by itself after 6 seconds if not destroyed before hand. It deals damage when reactivated.
  • Skarner Skarner's Crystalline Exoskeleton.png Crystalline Exoskeleton shields himself from 10% maximum health (+ 80% AP) damage for up to 6 seconds.
  • Tahm Kench Tahm Kench's Thick Skin.png Thick Skin converts his current Grey Health into a health shield that lasts 3 seconds.
  • Udyr Udyr's Turtle Stance.png Turtle Stance upon activation it gives himself a shield that will protect him from 60 / 95 / 130 / 165 / 220 (+ 50% AP) for up to 5 seconds.
  • Urgot Urgot's Terror Capacitor.png Terror Capacitor gives him a shield that absorbs 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 80% AP) (+ 8% maximum mana) damage for 5 seconds.
  • Vi Vi's Blast Shield.png Blast Shield gives her a shield equal to 10% of her maximum health for up to 3 seconds when she hits an enemy with one of her activated abilities. This effect has a static cooldown of 18 - 8 (based on level) seconds.
  • Viktor Viktor's Siphon Power.png Siphon Power shields himself for 8% maximum mana (+ 15% AP) for up to 2.5 seconds.
  • Yasuo Yasuo's Way of the Wanderer.png Way of the Wanderer at maximum Flow, grants him a shield that absorbs 100 - 510 (based on level) for up to 1 second when he is damaged by a champion or monster.

Items

  • Face of the Mountain item.png Face of the Mountain: Active: Unique: Grant a shield to an ally equal to 10% of your maximum health for 4 seconds. After 4 seconds, the shield explodes to slow nearby enemies by 40% for 2 seconds (60 second cooldown).
    +500 health, +100% base health regeneration, +10% cooldown reduction. Unique Passive – Spoils of War: Melee basic attacks execute minions below 400 + (100% AD) health. Killing a minion heals you and the nearest allied champion for 50 + (1% of your maximum health) and grants them kill gold.This effect requires a nearby allied champion to trigger. Recharges every 30 seconds, up to a maximum of 4 charges. You may only be in possession of 1 Gold Income item. 2200 Gold
  • Locket of the Iron Solari item.png Locket of the Iron Solari: Active: Unique: Shield yourself and nearby allied champions for 2 seconds, absorbing up to 90 - 345 (based on level) damage (60 second cooldown) (600 range).
    +400 health, +20 magic resistance, +10% cooldown reduction. Unique Aura – Legion: Nearby allies gain +20 magic resist (1100 range). 2500 Gold
  • Seraph's Embrace item.png Seraph's Embrace: Active: Unique – Mana Shield: Drains 20% of your current mana to shield yourself for an equal amount plus 150 for 3 seconds (120 second cooldown).
    +1000 mana, +80 ability power, +50% base mana regen seconds. Unique Passive – Insight: Gain ability power equal to 3% of your maximum mana.
  • Summoner's Rift, Howling Abyss The Bloodthirster item.png The Bloodthirster: Passive: Unique: Your life steal overheals you, converting the excess healing into a shield that absorbs up to 50 - 350 (based on level) damage and decays when out of combat for 25 seconds.
    +80 attack damage. Unique Passive: +20% life steal. 3700 Gold

  • Barrier.png Barrier: Shields your champion for 115 - 455 (based on level) for 2 seconds.

Champion abilities that can shield others

  • Morgana Morgana's Black Shield.png Black Shield places a shield around herself or a friendly champion, absorbing 70 / 140 / 210 / 280 / 350 (+ 70% AP) magic damage and prevents the application of crowd control effects while the shield holds. Lasts 5 seconds or until the shield has been depleted.

Champion abilities that shield only the user

  • Kassadin Kassadin's Null Sphere.png Null Sphere grants him a shield that absorbs 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 + (30% AP) magic damage for 1.5 seconds.

Items

  • Hexdrinker item.png Hexdrinker: Passive: Unique – Lifeline: Upon taking magic damage that would reduce maximum health below 30%, grants a shield that absorbs 110 - 280 (based on level) magic damage for 5 seconds. (90 second cooldown)
    +20 attack damage, +35 magic resistance. 1300 Gold
  • Maw of Malmortius item.png Maw of Malmortius: Passive: Upon taking magic damage that would reduce maximum health below 30%, grants Lifeline and Lifegrip (90 second cooldown). Unique – Lifeline: Grants a shield that absorbs 300 (+ 100% bonus magic resistance) magic damage for 5 seconds.
    +55 attack damage, +40 magic resistance, +10 armor penetration. Passive: Unique – Lifegrip: Grants +10% spell vamp and +10% life steal until out-of-combat. 3250 Gold
