Orianna Orianna shields herself with Command Protect Command Protect

Shields are not to be confused with armor and magic resistance bonuses.

Shield refers to the game mechanic which grants temporary health to a champion for some time. These shields absorb a set amount of damage before it disappears, whether because it reached its capacity of damage absorption or because its duration ran out. It is marked by an extra white bar in the champion's health bar.

Most of these shields are granted by champion abilities.

Shield types

Shields are classified by the type of damage they absorb. Most of them absorb all types of damage, including true damage. Magic shields absorb only magic damage. They appear purple instead of the normal white, and champions with magic shields take direct damage to their health from physical and true damage.

All shields take the champion's resistances into account when receiving damage to the temporary health.

Spell shields, which allow you to completely block the effect of one single ability, are not considered a type of shield.

Some "shields" such as Leona's Leona's Eclipse Eclipse grant armor, magic resistance or damage reduction when activated, but as these don't give any "temporary health" they are not considered shields.

Champion abilities that can shield others

  • Ivern's Ivern's Triggerseed Triggerseed shields his target for 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 / 190 (+ 80% AP) damage for up 2 seconds.
  • Janna's Janna's Eye of the Storm Eye of the Storm shields her target for 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 70% AP) damage for up to 5 seconds.
  • Karma's Karma's Inspire Inspire shields her target for 70 / 95 / 120 / 145 / 170 (+ 50% AP) damage for up to 4 seconds.
    • Defiance Defiance shields her target for 70 / 95 / 120 / 145 / 170 (+ 110% AP) + (30 / 90 / 150 / 210, scaling with Mantra Mantra) damage and allied champions near the primary target for half the total amount for up to 4 seconds.
  • Lee Sin's Lee Sin's Safeguard Safeguard rushes him towards a target ally unit, shielding him from 40 / 100 / 160 / 220 / 280 (+ 80% AP) damage for the next 2 seconds. If the target ally was a champion, they also receive this shield.
  • Lulu's Lulu's Help, Pix! Help, Pix! summons Pix and shields target ally champion for 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 60% AP) damage for up to 6 seconds.
  • Lux's Lux's Prismatic Barrier Prismatic Barrier shields herself and throws out her wand in a line, shielding allied champions in its path for 50 / 65 / 80 / 95 / 110 (+ 20% AP) for up to 3 seconds. Lux's wand then returns to her, stacking the shield to all allied champions it passes through and herself.
  • Orianna's Orianna's Command Protect Command Protect commands her ball to fly to and attach onto an allied champion shielding it for 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 40% AP) damage when it arrives for up to 4 seconds.
  • Rakan's Rakan's Battle Dance Battle Dance makes him dash to an ally, shielding them for 50 / 85 / 120 / 155 / 190 (+ 80% AP) damage for 3 seconds. He can recast the ability for free in the next 5 seconds, granting the same shield.
  • Sona's Sona's Aria of Perseverance Aria of Perseverance activates an aura that applies to all tagged allied champions a shield that absorbs 30 / 55 / 80 / 105 / 130 (+ 30% AP) damage for up to 1.5 seconds.
  • Shen's Shen's Stand United Stand United shields an allied champion for 175 / 350 / 525 (+ 130% AP) damage for up to 5 seconds. The shield's base value is increased by 1% for every 1% of the target's missing health, up to maximum of 60% bonus at 40% of the target's missing health.
  • Taric's Taric's Bastion Bastion shields himself and a target allied champion for 8 / 9 / 10 / 11 / 12% of target's maximum health damage for up to 2.5 seconds.
  • Thresh's Thresh's Dark Passage Dark Passage tosses his lantern towards the target location for up to 6 seconds. The first ally who comes near the lantern gains a shield lasting 4 seconds that that absorbs up to 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 1 per soul soul collected) damage.

Champion abilities that shield only the user

  • Blitzcrank's Blitzcrank's Mana Barrier Mana Barrier creates a shield to protect him for damage equal to 50% of his current mana for up to 10 seconds. This happens when his health falls below 20% of his maximum health and has a static cooldown of 90 seconds after it activates for it to be available again.
  • Diana's Diana's Pale Cascade Pale Cascade shields herself from up to 40 / 55 / 70 / 85 / 100 (+ 30% AP) damage or for 5 seconds. If all three spheres are triggered, the shield is reapplied. The second shield stacks with the first.
  • Evelynn's Evelynn's Agony's Embrace Agony's Embrace shields herself from up to 150 / 225 / 300 per enemy champion that is hit and lasts up to 6 seconds.
  • Jarvan IV's Jarvan IV's Golden Aegis Golden Aegis shields himself from up to 65 / 90 / 115 / 140 / 165 damage plus 2 / 2.5 / 3 / 3.5 / 4% of Jarvan IV's maximum health damage per nearby enemy champion for up to 5 seconds.
  • Kled's Kled's Chaaaaaaaarge!!! Chaaaaaaaarge!!! shields himself for up to 200 / 300 / 400 (+ 300% bonus AD) damage while he is charging and for 2 seconds after the charge ends.
  • Malphite's Malphite's Granite Shield Granite Shield passively shields him with a layer of rock which absorbs damage equal to 10% of his maximum health. If Malphite has not been hit for Error: Parameter '3' is not accepted. seconds, this effect recharges.
  • Mordekaiser's Mordekaiser's Iron Man Iron Man passively gives him a temporary shield equal to 25% of the damage dealt from his abilities, halved to 12.5% against enemy minions and capped at 25% maximum health. After a 1.5 seconds delay, Iron Man's shield decays at a rate of 1.5% base health per second down to a minimum of 25% maximum shield.
  • Nautilus' Nautilus' Titan's Wrath Titan's Wrath shields himself from 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 (+ 9 / 11 / 13 / 15 / 17% of maximum health) damage for up to 10 seconds.
  • Poppy's Poppy's Iron Ambassador Iron Ambassador shields herself for Error: Parameter '3' is not accepted.% of her maximum health if she picks her buckler up after throwing it.
  • Rakan's Rakan's Fey Feathers Fey Feathers shields him for Template:Pp18 (+ 90% AP) damage. This shield has a cooldown of Error: Parameter '3' is not accepted. seconds, reduced by 1 second every time he damages an enemy champion with a basic attack or ability.
  • Riven's Riven's Valor Valor dashes her towards the cursor and grants her a shield protecting her from 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 / 210 (+ 100% bonus AD) damage for up to 1.5 seconds.
  • Rumble's Rumble's Scrap Shield Scrap Shield creates a shield protecting from 50 / 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 (+ 40% AP) damage for up to 2 seconds. If he has 50 or more heat when casting it, the shield is increased to 75 / 120 / 165 / 210 / 255 (+ 60% AP).
  • Ryze's Ryze's Overload Overload grants him a shield that absorbs Template:Pp18 (+ 60% AP) (+ 3% bonus mana) for 2 seconds if he casts the spell with 2 runes ready.
  • Shen's Shen's Ki Barrier Ki Barrier shields him for Template:Pp18 (+ 14% bonus health) damage for up to 2.5 seconds each time he casts an ability with a static cooldown of 10 seconds. If the triggering ability successfully affected at least one champion, Ki Barrier's cooldown is reduced by Error: Parameter '3' is not accepted. seconds.
  • Sion's Sion's Soul Furnace Soul Furnace surrounds himself with a shield which absorbs 30 / 55 / 80 / 105 / 130 (+ 40% AP) (+ 6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / 10% of maximum health) damage for up to 6 seconds. You can deactivate it after 3 seconds or it will destroy by itself after 6 seconds if not destroyed before hand. It deals damage when reactivated.
  • Skarner's Skarner's Crystalline Exoskeleton Crystalline Exoskeleton shields himself from 10% maximum health (+ 80% AP) damage for up to 6 seconds.
  • Tahm Kench's Tahm Kench's Thick Skin Thick Skin converts his current Grey Health into a health shield that lasts 3 seconds.
  • Udyr's Udyr's Turtle Stance Turtle Stance upon activation it gives himself a shield that will protect him from 60 / 95 / 130 / 165 / 220 (+ 50% AP) for up to 5 seconds.
  • Urgot's Urgot's Purge Purge shields him for 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 (+ 30% bonus health) damage for 4 seconds.
  • Vi's Vi's Blast Shield Blast Shield gives her a shield equal to 10% of her maximum health for up to 3 seconds when she hits an enemy with one of her activated abilities. This effect has a static cooldown of Error: Parameter '3' is not accepted. seconds.
  • Viktor's Viktor's Siphon Power Siphon Power shields himself for 8% maximum mana (+ 15% AP) for up to 2.5 seconds.
  • Yasuo's Yasuo's Way of the Wanderer Way of the Wanderer at maximum Flow, grants him a shield that absorbs Template:Pp18 for up to 1 second when he is damaged by a champion or monster.

Items

  • Face of the Mountain Face of the Mountain: Active: Unique – Deadly Phalanx: Hybrid resistances icon Shield yourself and an ally equal to 10% of your maximum health for 4 seconds. Afterwards, the shield is consumed to Slow icon slow nearby enemies by 40% for 2 seconds (60 second cooldown).
  • Locket of the Iron Solari Locket of the Iron Solari: Active: Unique – Devotion: Grants you and allied champions within Range center 850 units a Hybrid resistances icon shield for 200 − 360 (based on target's level) that decays over 2.5 seconds (90 second cooldown).
  • Seraph's Embrace Seraph's Embrace:
  • Sterak's Gage Sterak's Gage: Passive: Unique – Lifeline: If you would take damage that would reduce you below 30% of your maximum health, you first gain a Hybrid resistances icon shield that absorbs damage equal to 80% of bonus health which decays over 4.5 seconds, as well as 10% increased size for 8 seconds (60 second cooldown). 
  • The Bloodthirster The Bloodthirster:

Spells

  • Barrier BarrierHybrid resistances icon Shields your champion for 105 − 411 (based on level) for 2 seconds. (Self range; 180 seconds cooldown)

Masteries

  • Courage of the Colossus mastery 2017 Courage of the Colossus: Gain a shield for 3 − 54 (based on level) (+ 5% maximum health) per nearby enemy champion for 3 seconds after hitting an enemy champion with a stun, taunt, snare, or knock up. (45 − 30 (based on level) second cooldown)

Champion abilities that shield only the user

  • Camille's Camille's Adaptive Defenses Adaptive Defenses grants her a physical damage shield for 20% of her maximum health if she attacks a target that would deal more physical than magic damage to her for Error: Parameter '3' is not accepted. seconds.

Champion abilities that can shield others

  • Morgana's Morgana's Black Shield Black Shield places a shield around herself or a friendly champion, absorbing 70 / 140 / 210 / 280 / 350 (+ 70% AP) magic damage and prevents the application of crowd control effects while the shield holds. Lasts 5 seconds or until the shield has been depleted.

Champion abilities that shield only the user

  • Camille's Camille's Adaptive Defenses Adaptive Defenses grants her a magic damage shield for 20% of her maximum health if she attacks a target that would deal more magic than physical damage to her for Error: Parameter '3' is not accepted. seconds.
  • Galio's Galio's Shield of Durand Shield of Durand passively grants him a magic damage shield for 8 / 11 / 14 / 17 / 20% of his maximum health, refreshing after not taking damage for 12 seconds.
  • Kassadin's Kassadin's Null Sphere Null Sphere grants him a shield that absorbs 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 + (30% AP) magic damage for 1.5 seconds.

Items

  • Hexdrinker Hexdrinker: Passive: Unique – Lifeline: If you would take magic damage that would reduce you below 30% of your maximum health, you first gain a Hybrid resistances icon shield that absorbs (Melee role 110 − 280 / Ranged role 82.5 − 210) (based on level) magic damage for 2.5 seconds (90 second cooldown).
  • Maw of Malmortius Maw of Malmortius: Passive: Unique – Lifeline: If you would take magic damage that would reduce you below 30% of your maximum health, you first gain a Hybrid resistances icon shield that absorbs (Melee role 200 / Ranged role 150) (+ (Melee role 225% / Ranged role 168.75%) bonus AD) magic damage for 2.5 seconds (90 second cooldown). Passive: Unique: Triggering Lifeline also grants 12% life steal while in in-combat. This effect is lost after leaving combat.
