NOTE: Not to be confused with on-hit effect, which are additional effects that occur when an attack lands.

Spell effects are effects that trigger on a champion's damaging abilities. They apply to all damaging abilities, with the exception of on-hit effects or abilities that specify that they apply on-hit effects. Abilities can apply any number of spell effects at once.


Champion Abilities

On-Spell Effects

The following effects occur when your champion's ability successfully hit its target, rather than when the ability is casted. They won't trigger if the ability is blocked or you miss the ability.

On-Being Hit Effects

The following effects can occur when your champion is hit by a basic attack or ability, whether or not deals damage.

On-Cast Effects

The following effects occur when your champion casts an ability, rather than when the ability deals damage. These effects will occur even on damageless abilities, if the ability is blocked, or if the ability misses.

On-Hit Effects

The following "on-hit effects" are incorrectly, although possibly intentionally classified as abilities and will trigger spell effects. The triggering attack can still trigger on-hit effects.

Shaco Shaco's Jack in the Box.png Jack in the Box will trigger spell effects, and despite having attack damage it deals damage based on an unseen statistic.

Items

Applying Spell Effects

The following damaging items will apply spell effects sourced from items (they will not apply champion-specific spell effects):

  • Bilgewater Cutlass item.png Bilgewater Cutlass: Active: Unique: Deals 100 magic damage and Slow icon slows the target enemy champion by 25% for 2 seconds (550 range) (90 second cooldown).
  • Blade of the Ruined King item.png Blade of the Ruined King: Active: Unique: Deals 100 magic damage and steals 25% of the target's movement speed for 3 seconds (550 range) (90 second cooldown).
  • Hextech Gunblade item.png Hextech Gunblade: Active: Unique – Lightning Bolt: Instantly deals 175 - 250 (based on level) (+ 30% AP) magic damage and Slow icon slows the target champion's movement speed by 40% for 2 seconds (700 range) (40 second cooldown, shared with other Hextech items).
  • Luden's Echo item.png Luden's Echo: Passive: Unique – Echo: Gains charges upon moving or casting. At 100 charges, the next instance of ability damage you deal will expend all charges to deal 100 (+ 10% AP) bonus magic damage to the first enemy hit and summon up to 3 lesser bolts that target nearby enemies, prioritizing enemies damaged by the ability and champions over minions.

On-Spell Effects

The following effects occur when your champion's ability deals damage, rather than when the ability is casted. They won't trigger if the ability is blocked or you miss the ability.

  • Liandry's Torment item.png Liandry's Torment: Passive: Unique: Dealing spell damage applies a damage-over-time effect that deals bonus magic damage equal to 2% of the target's current health per second for 3 seconds. This bonus damage is doubled to 4% of the target's current health against movement-impaired units and capped at 100 damage per second against monsters.
  • Luden's Echo item.png Luden's Echo: Passive: Unique – Echo: Gains charges upon moving or casting. At 100 charges, the next instance of ability damage you deal will expend all charges to deal 100 (+ 10% AP) bonus magic damage to the first enemy hit and summon up to 3 lesser bolts that target nearby enemies, prioritizing enemies damaged by the ability and champions over minions.
  • Rylai's Crystal Scepter item.png Rylai's Crystal Scepter: Passive: Unique – Icy: Damaging abilities and pet attacks Slow icon slow affected units by 20% for 1 second.
  • Muramana item.png Muramana: Passive: Unique – Shock: Unit-targeted abilities and basic attacks on champions (on-hit) consume 3% current mana to deal 6% current mana bonus physical damage. This effect only activates while you have greater than 20% maximum mana.

On-Being Hit Effects

The following effects can occur when your champion is hit by a basic attack or ability, whether or not deals damage.

  • Banshee's Veil item.png Banshee's Veil: Passive: Unique: Grants a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability. This shield refreshes after no damage is taken from enemy champions for 40 seconds.
  • Hexdrinker item.png Hexdrinker: Passive: Unique – Lifeline: Upon taking magic damage that would reduce maximum health below 30%, grants a shield that absorbs 110 - 280 (based on level) magic damage for 5 seconds. (90 second cooldown)
  • Maw of Malmortius item.png Maw of Malmortius: Passive: Upon taking magic damage that would reduce maximum health below 30%, grants Lifeline and Lifegrip (90 second cooldown). Passive: Unique – Lifeline: Grants a shield that absorbs 300 (+ 100% bonus magic resistance) magic damage for 5 seconds.

On-Cast Effects

The following effects occur when your champion casts an ability, rather than when the ability deals damage. They will trigger even if the ability is blocked or you miss the ability.

Exceptions

Some effects are applied by abilities, but are not considered spell effects.

On-Damage Effects

The following effects occur when your champion deals damage. Most effects will only apply from specific damage types.
