Thornmail is an advanced item in League of Legends.[1]

Recipe

Thornmail item
Thornmail
2200 Gold 2200 (1180 Gold 1180)

Cost Analysis

Gold Value

  • 100 armor = 2000g
    • Total Gold Value = 2000g

Gold efficiency

  • Thornmail Thornmail is 90.9% gold efficient.
  • For the item to be gold efficient, its passive must have a value of at least 200 gold.

Notes

  • On being hit, Thornmail will reflect 30% of the physical damage dealt by the attacker, including most physical on-hit effects.
    • Thornmail is also triggered by Infinite Duress Infinite Duress, so it would appear that Thornmail applies to anything that would apply life steal.
  • Damage is reflected when hit by an attack, regardless of whether the attack deals damage. If the attacker is blinded, or the wearer is protected by a shield or invulnerability, damage will still be reflected.
    • Abilities that apply on-hit effects, such as Blade Waltz Blade Waltz, will trigger Thormail.
  • If you have >233.3 effective armor, Thornmail will reflect more damage than you receive, assuming the attacker has 0 magic resist; if they have 30 magic resist, >333.3 armor is required.

Strategy

  • Thornmail is a particularly effective defensive option when facing down opponents whose damage is dealt primarily through autoattacks, or against opponents that utilize on-hit healing to survive fights (such as life steal).
  • Unlike Molten Shield Molten Shield and Defensive Ball Curl Defensive Ball Curl, Thornmail's magic damage does not trigger spell effects.
  • There is a common misconception that life steal and magic resistance "counter" Thornmail, but this is largely incorrect. A combination of magic resistance and life steal will mitigate the reflected damage, but only large quantities of either will see net health gains from life steal.
  • Thornmail Thornmail is often overshadowed by the other two high armor items, Frozen Heart Frozen Heart and Randuin's Omen Randuin's Omen, because it benefits only the wearer instead of the entire team and only provides armor.
  • Champions such as Rammus Rammus, Galio Galio and Shen Shen can make great use of the passive effect due to their ability to taunt enemies, forcing enemies to attack them.

Trivia

  • It is the only purchasable item in the tutorial.
  • Currently, this item offers the largest amount of armor along with Frozen Heart Frozen Heart.
