With the recent changes to Blade of the Ruined King (BotRK) a lot of people have been picking it up and subsequently a lot of people have been calling it OP. Personally I don't think it is, but let's break it down anyway.

First up, Riot changed the item so that it gives attack speed, which a lot of AD based Champions (obviously) need. But with this change BotRK finally achieves what it was created for, to replace Madred's Bloodrazor. With the added Attack speed it finally comes back to it's roots and in line with it's function. Killing tanks.

The second change is the Active ability, this is where I think RIOT went wrong. It's the Deathfire Grasp(DFG) debacle all over again, they made it too strong. Not that 15% of max HP is too much or something. It has a couple of issues:

  • The active gives you the health it deals in damage
  • The active is on a percentage damage sustain item
  • The active has Crowd Control (cc)

Imagine having the DFG-active on Liandry's Torment with the slow and spell vamp components from Hextech Gunblade, then you'd have the AP equivalent to the current BotRK.

This is where the true flame issue resides with. The current meta revolves around health, BotRK ruins that. So people will need to pick up armor again, I can personally recommend the Executioner's Calling item Executioner's Calling & Atma's Impaler item Atma's Impaler combination, it works quite well with health.
