Champion reworks/Elise the Spider Queen

Emptylord February 16, 2015 User blog:Emptylord

Elise was released under advertisement of a champion that can switch between a regal mage or a deadly spider assassin on a whim. Like all transform champions before her, she struggled to strike a balance between having access to 6 abilities early game and lacking the power-spike/big-finisher of an ultimate - either doomed to fall off as the game transitioned into late game or to be hit by the nerf bat. Unfortunately, she fell into the latter category and after a long series of nerfs to her damage, mobility and durability - she's been left in a spot where she's almost exclusively played as a tank. Similar to Ahri, I feel Elise needs to take a few steps backward and for a new direction to be chosen for her balance changes.

  • Spider Queen.png Spider Queen
    • Revised Innate: While in Spider Form, Elise surrounds herself with 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 untargetable spiderlings that attack nearby foes. Spiderlings deal 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 (+10% AP) magic damage, based on ranks in Spider Form.png Spider Form.
      • Human form effect removed.
      • Maximum number of spiderlings is now irrelevant of Spider Form.png Spider Form's rank.
      • Spiderlings are now untargetable.
      • Potential Balance Lever: Spiderlings beyond the first will deal reduced damage or Spiderlings beyond the first deal no base damage.
  • Neurotoxin.png Neurotoxin (Q)
    • Damage increased to 50 / 95 / 140 / 185 / 230 from 40 / 75 / 110 / 145 / 180.
  • Spider Form.png Spider Form (R)
  • Venomous Bite.png Venomous Bite (RQ)
    • Damage changed to 50 / 140 / 230 / 310 from 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220.
  • Skittering Frenzy.png Skittering Frenzy (RW)
    • Passive attack speed adjusted to 5 / 15 / 25 / 35 % from 5 / 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 %.
    • Active attack speed adjusted to 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 % from 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 140 %.
  • Rappel.png Rappel (RE)
    • Cooldown adjusted to 26 / 21 / 16 / 11 from 26 / 23 / 20 / 17 / 14.

  • Spider Queen.png Spider Queen
    • Revised Innate: While in Spider Form, Elise surrounds herself with 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 untargetable spiderlings that attack nearby foes. Spiderlings deal 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 (+10% AP) magic damage, based on ranks in Rappel.png Rappel.
  • Cocoon Adhesive Webbing (new E)
    • Passive: Elise and her Spiderlings gain 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 % bonus movement speed and immunity to slows while on the webbing, as well as sight of the covered area. This passive applies to both forms.
    • Active: Elise hurls a globule of webbing toward the target location that rapidly expands into a wall while in flight. If the webbing collides with an enemy while in flight or an enemy walks through the wall once it is standing, it will collapse coating all enemies in a wide area with web: slowing their movement speed by 99% that decays over 1 second and causing enemy champions to leaving behind a trail of webbing for 5 seconds.
    • Walls last for 4 minutes and Elise can have up to 4 at a time.
    • Cooldown: 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10
  • Rappel.png Rappel (R)
    • Moved to [R] from [E2].
    • Elise will now ascend from Human Form and descend in Spider Form.
    • Cooldown changed to 26 / 20 / 14 / 8 seconds from (Rappel:) 26 / 23 / 20 / 17 / 14 or (Spider Form:) 4. The cooldown begins upon entering Spider Form.
    • Spider Form's bonus on-hit damage removed. Spiderlings are now untargetable, meaning they are a guaranteed on-hit damage.
    • Venomous Bite.png Venomous Bite, Skittering Frenzy.png Skittering Frenzy and Rappel.png Rappel now scale with ranks in Rappel.png Rappel, instead of ranks in Q/W/E.
  • Spider Form.png Human Form (R2)
    • Elise returns to Human Form.
  • Venomous Bite.png Venomous Bite (RQ)
    • Damage changed to 50 / 140 / 230 / 310 from 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220.

    • Active attack speed adjusted to 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 % from 60 / 80 / 100 / 120 / 140 %.
  • Cocoon.png Webspinner (new RE)
    • Active: Elise coats the target 1000-radius area with webbing. Elise can have up to 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 areas of webbing active at a time. Webspinner uses a stock system and Elise can have up to 2 in reserve.
    • Recharge time: 90 / 75 / 60 / 45 / 30 seconds
    • Cooldown: 30 seconds
    • Range: 900 / Global Webspinner can only be cast in locations where it overlaps with existing webbing or would directly affect Elise.

  • Cocoon.png Cocoon (I)
    • Innate: Elise and her spiderlings' basic attacks apply stacks of webbing to their target for 3.5 seconds. Upon reaching 3 stacks, the target is stunned for 1 second. This cannot happen again on the same target for 8 seconds.
    • Targets will not generate stacks while immune.
  • Neurotoxin.png Neurotoxin (Q)
    • Active - Enemy Target: Elise launches a blast of poison at the target enemy, dealing magic damage equal 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 plus 8% (+3% per 100 AP) of her target's current health. Damage is capped against monsters.
    • Acitve - Spiderling Target: Elise laces the target spiderling with poison, creating a venom-gorged Volatile Spiderling.png Volatile Spiderling that chases down nearby enemies (prioritizing champions). Volatile spiderlings explode on contact with an enemy unit or after 3 seconds, dealing 75 / 125 / 175 / 225 / 275 (+ 80% AP) magic damage to all enemies in an area.
    • Cooldown: 6 / 5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4 seconds
  • Spider Queen.png Spider Swarm (W)
    • Active: Elise places a spider nest at the target location for 180 seconds that spawns a Spiderling every 6 seconds, up to a maximum of 3. Spiderlings will move to defend Elise while she is within 1300 units of the nest. Spiderlings are untargetable units that deal magic damage on their attacks and apply spell effects as a damage over time.
    • Spider Swarm uses a stock system: Elise will periodically store a nest and can hold up to 2 nests. Elise can have a maximum of 4 nests on the field at any one time.
    • Spiderling Damage: 10 + (2.5 x level) (+10% AP)
    • Recharge time: 90 / 75 / 60 / 45 / 30 seconds
    • Cooldown: 30 seconds
      • Nests have 4 health and take 1 damage per second from being stood on by a champion and 5 damage from turret attacks.
      • Spiderlings have the following attack priority:
        1. Enemy champion's Elise has damaged in the last 3.5 seconds
        2. Elise's attack target
        3. Enemy champions damage Elise
        4. Enemies attacking the nest
        5. The closest enemy to the nest
      • Spiderlings cannot move more than 1300 units from its nest but will persist for 6 seconds after the death of their nest. This does not apply to Volatile Spiderlings.
  • Cocoon Adhesive Webbing (E)
    • Active: Elise hurls a globule of webbing toward the target location that rapidly expands into a wall while in flight. If the webbing collides with an enemy while in flight or an enemy walks through the wall once it is standing, it will collapse coating all enemies in a wide area with web: slowing their movement speed by 99% that decays over 1 second and causing enemy champions to leaving behind a trail of webbing for 5 seconds. Elise and her spiderlings gain 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 % bonus movement speed and immunity to slows while on the webbing, as well as sight of coated enemies.

  • Stats
    • Range reduced to 125 from 500.
  • Neurotoxin.png Neurotoxin (I)

  • Venomous Bite.png Venomous Bite (Q)
    • Active: Elise and her spiderlings lunge at her target for a venomous bite, dealing magic damage equal to 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 plus 8% (+3% per 100 AP) of her target's missing health. Damage is capped against monsters.
    • Cooldown: 6 seconds
  • Skittering Frenzy.png Skittering Frenzy (W)
    • Passive - Cocoon.png Cocoon: Elise and her spiderling's basic attacks apply stacks of webbing to their target for 3.5 seconds. Upon reaching 3 stacks, the target is stunned for 1 second. This cannot happen again on the same target for 8 seconds.

    • Active: Elise ascends into the air for up to 5 seconds, becoming untargetable as well as gaining unobstructed sight, the ability to ignore terrain and unit collision and 40% bonus movement speed. Elise gains the ability to cast Descend for the duration. If Elise does not cast Descend, it will go off automatically directly beneath her after 5 seconds.
    • Cooldown: 150 / 110 / 80 seconds
      • Unobstructed sight refers to the ability to see into brush and over terrain.
      • The ability to ignore terrain collision does not extend to the edges of the map.

  • Pending ultimate... any ideas?

I am thinking-out-loud here. Feel free to contribute and critique.

The beautiful thing about Gnar is that he gets all the fun of a shape-shifter AND all the fun of an ultimate.

Non-ultimate shape-shifters:

  1. One of the basic abilities, as with Rek'Sai.
  2. A resource system that unlocks an alternate set of abilities.
    1. As with Gnar, this could be a manditory shapeshift that will trigger after a delay.
    2. As with one of my proposed Quinn changes, this is optional and the resouce will deplete if you do not transform during the window of opportunity.
  3. One of the basic abilities but it can only be activated in certain conditions - imagine Volibear's Frenzy, or Jax's old Counter Strike.
  4. A system similar to Lee Sin, where each basic ability has a natural transformation follow-up. You would remain transformed for a fixed duration, as with Gnar.
  5. Unlocking an alternate set of abilities when a certain condition is met - such as being reduced below a certain health value, or reducing an enemy below a certain health value, or if an enemy is made vulnerable (CC'd, etc).
    1. This could be mandatory - meaning you will always transform when you reduce someone below 20% health (or, gated by a cooldown).
    2. This could be optional - although I do not yet know how the "optional" would be catered to without taking up a button. Perhaps, you can issue an extended movement/attack command to channel the transformation.
  6. A certain chain of abilities will trigger the transformation - such as attacking an encumbered target, or landing two abilities on the same target.

  • Spider Queen.png Spider Swarm (I)
    • Elise now summons spiderlings in her human form. This could be under the same mechanic as live (whenever she lands an ability), or it could require a little more interaction.
  • Neurotoxin.png Neurotoxin (Q)
    • Can be cast on spiderlings to make them volatile (as with my Mage Rework).
  • Spider Form.png Spider Form (W)
    • Now a basic ability.
  • New Ultimate (R)
    • BANG!

A - Mandatory
  • Spider Form.png Spider Form (I)
    • Elise generates Frenzy while in combat. At 100 Frenzy she gains access to an alternate set of abilities and casting one will transform her into a spider. After 4 seconds she will transform into a spider anyway.
B - Optional
  • Spider Form.png Spider Form (I)
    • Elise generates Frenzy whenever she casts an ability, up to 100. At 100 Frenzy, she gains access to an alternate set of abilities for 6 seconds and casting one will transform her into a spider. If she does not transform, her Frenzy will decay to 0. Or her Frenzy could decay over the 6 seconds - for some functionality. A benefit to transforming quickly?

...

  • New Ultimate (R)
    • BANG!

  • Neurotoxin.png Neurotoxin
    • Elise gains the ability to cast Venomous Bite for 3 seconds.

... or ...

  • Cocoon.png Cocoon (E)
    • Live Effect: If Elise lands Cocoon on an enemy, she gains the ability to cast Spider Form for 3 seconds.
    • Duellist Rework Effect: Applying 3 stacks of webbing will stun the target and grant Elise the ability to cast Spider Form for 3 seconds.
  • New Ultimate (R)
    • BANG!

  • Spider Form.png Spider Form (I)
    • Casting Venomous Bite, Skittering Frenzy or Rappel will cause Elise to transform into a spider for 15 seconds.
  • Neurotoxin.png Neurotoxin (Q)
    • Elise gains the ability to cast Venomous Bite for 3 seconds.
  • Volatile Spiderling.png Volatile Spiderling (W)
    • Elise gains the ability to cast Skittering Frenzy for 3 seconds.
  • Cocoon.png Cocoon (E)
    • Elise gains the ability to cast Rappel for 3 seconds.
  • New Ultimate (R)
    • BANG!

Admitedly the specific abilities would need to chain a little more... naturally. Maybe:

  • Human W: Elise hurls a nest at the target location, dealing magic damage on impact and summoning a number of spiderlings. Elise gains the ability to cast Skittering Frenzy for 3 seconds.
  • Human E: Adhesive Webbing

To be honest, this mechanic probably doesn't suit Elise. Some of her abilities chain naturally, but it would be impossible to make all of them chain naturally while also working as standard Q/W/E kits in both forms (...and still be Elise). Another champion maybe.

  • Spider Form.png Spider Form (I)
    • A) Whenever an enemy champion is dropped below 50% of their maximum health, Elise enters a frenzy - enabling her to cast an alternate set of abilities for 3 seconds. Casting one of those abilities will transform Elise into a spider for 15 seconds. Enemy champions cannot send Elise into a Frenzy again for 15 seconds, starting either after she returns to human form or upon opting not to transform.
    • B) Whenever an enemy champion takes more than 20% of their current health as damage, Elise enters a frenzy...
    • C) Whenever an enemy's movement is inhibited (stunned, rooted, etc), Elise enters a frenzy...

On my Quinn rework I basically had her transformation hinder on "Vulnerability", and I just played around with that makes an enemy Vulnerable. On Quinn, the intent was to require team work (Quinn is the original teamwork ADC) - so you need an ally with CC to use Tag Team. That sort of thing. On Elise, she has her own stun, but interacting with allies is still fun.

A quality of life rework that changes isolation to utilize line of sight, as well as giving him tools to reduce his target's sight radius, rather than the current by-the-patch-radius.

Emptylord ArbiterSquare

Ionia Placidium Navori
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord Ao ShinSquare

"You think flattery will save your life?" - Ao Shin the Storm Dragon

Ao Shin's core directive resembles Singed, in the sense of having a trailing body that interacts with those behind him. However, Ao Shin is a Warden, and using his power of the winds to protect his allies as much as he uses it to devastate his enemies.

Piltover Ecliptic Vaults
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord AzazelSquare

"I've got a pretty severe case of phantom limb." - Azazel the Arcanist

All Ezreal gauntlets come in pairs. Azazel is a spellslinger, boasting a damage paradigm more similar to a marksman but from the comfort of a kit that's likely to be more attractive to mage players.

Zaun Depths
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord BallisticSquare

"I shot first." - Ballistic the Living Artillery

Ballistic can turn anything he touches into a projectile that travels with bullet-like force. Using the battlefield itself as a resource, Ballistic must be constantly moving to find fresh debris. Taliyah before Taliyah.

Emptylord DannisSquare

"Ha, two birds with one stone!" - Dannis the Headcracker

Dannis was created during an exploration of attack modifiers for marksmen, inspired by Graves' shotgun. Wielding a sling, players must wind-up and aim each of Dannis' attacks.

Noxus Bastion
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord DirkSquare

"No treats until you bring me their corpses!" - Dirk the Noxian Beastmaster

Dirk was created alongside Finn to address the severe lack of pet-using champions. The Hounds of Noxus should feel familiar to Orianna players, but with a more ferocious and oppressive flavour.

Zaun Depths
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord EbonmawSquare

"All will be cinders!" - Ebonmaw the Terror of Zaun

Despite featuring both Aurelion Sol Aurelion Sol and Shyvana Shyvana, we still lack a champion that soars above the battlefield and reigns elemental force upon the ground below.

Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord EurySquare (iBralui)

"I love this game! - Eury the Damsel of the Distress

Emptylord JeddicaSquare

"I am Iceborn and you gotta deal with it!" - Jeddica the Ice Breaker

Jeddica turns Rock Surfing.png Rock Surfing into an entire champion. Surfing around the battlefield like Frozone, Jeddica combine ice skating with the classical ice-sliding puzzles to provide a unique Disruptor experience.

Emptylord MowgliSquare

"(Unintelligible.) Hehehe." - Mowgli the Changling

Mowgli is a derivative of Heroes of the Storm's Murky, a champion that challenges the basic mechanics of respawn times, respawn location and bounty. Mowgli's the answer to a brick wall - keep throwing yourself at it until you break through. He's small, squishy and highly disposable - but he keeps coming back!

Bilgewater Slaughter Docks
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord MutinySquare

"Dead men tell no tales... ha, I wish." - Mutiny the Pirate King

The first Pirate King of Bilgewater, Mutiny brings the Curse of the Black Pearl to the Fields of Justice. Mutiny represents the eventual encroachment of the sea and death.

Nex is witch who cast the spell of Ruination. A elemental of Death, Nex wields the Black Mist to consume her enemies and expends those souls within her to stave off death. The Eulogy of the Isles.png Maiden of the Mists somewhat supersedes Nex.

Emptylord NighthawkSquare

"Bleed, everyone's doing it." - Nighthawk the Winged Fury

Hookshot.png Hookshot / Wall Dive.png Wall Dive dialled up to an entire champion. A wall-crawling predator that swoops from the shadows to fell the unprepared: Nighthawk challenges the basic mechanic of walking.

Freljord Tundra
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord NostrillaSquare

"I would hit you with my Ugly Stick, but I think it'd be an improvement!" - Nostrilla the Bogey Shaman

Created to meet the very shallow demand for an "ugly female humanoid monster" champion, Nostrilla was originally a Swamp Troll but was reworked with Trundle to fit the frost theme. Instead of decomposition, she now wields frostbite.

Shurima Homecoming
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord RiahSquare

"Faster, slaves!" - Riah the Plight of the Sands

My answer to Ra back before Azir Azir was even conceived. Ra's a Fighter that utilizes classic Egyptian themes of slavery and eating the sun.

Emptylord ShangSquare

"The secret to immortality? Not dying." - Master Shang

A fairly simple attempt to implement a martial arts champion that utilizes the archetypal combo mechanic of Fighter games. Designed during that phase when Kung Fu Pandas were all the rage.

Amumu Curse of Sad Mummy art 4
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord TeekSquare

"You're pwetty." - Teek the Mischievous Sprite

Teek's the champion to pick if your team needs a Leona-type support but you just hate playing tanks. Bouncy and explosive: he's a living Ziggs bomb.

Mount Targon Mountain
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord ThaneSquare

"The drums of war never stop." - Thane the Thunder Warrior

The League is represented by many champions that harness the power of lightning, but too few that realize the destructive force of sound. Thane provides a new frame of reference for the saying, "crack of doom".

Zaun Depths
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord TitanSquare

"How bothersome." - Titan the Case 53

Boring, boring, boring! Titan is the quintessential juggernaut: personal space issues, a complete disdain for social interaction, and a complete indifference to the supposed function of obstructions.

Amumu Curse of Sad Mummy art 4
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord YagaSquare

"What's the difference between the bad guy and a giant frog?" - Yaga the Stray Little Witch

Yaga's likely the champion that inspired Lulu Lulu. Original posted by Opip back on the original forums, I'm keeping her here for prosperity's sake.

Emptylord Marsh by Alex Levielle
Lesdin 5Gamma
Emptylord ZargonilSquare

"A leaf never falls in the wrong place." - Zargonil the Strike Toad

Created in an era before Fiora, Yasuo and Riven, Zargonil realised the fantasy of a highly mobile bladesman. At this point, Zargonil might be too much of a "good" thing.
