Niina, the One-Yordle Circus is a custom champion in League of Legends.

This my first champion concept, and I thank Nhan-Fiction a thousand for collaborating with me on this project of mine. It took a good 50 days to round out this concept, and I appreciate all the tweaks Nhan helped with. I look forward to working on more concepts. - GreenMoriyama


Abilities

Niina's basic abilities use the stance mechanic. Her basic abilities all have a persistent effect which remain until she activates another ability. Each ability also has a temporary activation effect that occurs upon being cast; the temporary effect of each stance persists for its full duration even if Niina switches stance. Switching stances sets off a 2.5 second global cooldown.

Whenever an enemy champion is affected by one of Niina’s abilities, all of her ability cooldowns are reduced by one second for each champion. Affected champions will then be marked with “entertained” for seven seconds; Niina will only receive half of the cooldown reduction if an affected champion already has “entertained”. Each ability only triggers the cooldown reduction once for each enemy champion.

Active: Choose a target location. When a location is selected, Niina will take 2 seconds to setup her cannon, during which she is channeling. She will then be shot towards the location, passing through terrain, minions and monsters. Upon arriving at the location after 0.5 to 2.5 seconds, she’ll inflict magic damage to all nearby enemy units, along with slowing them for 2 seconds. If an enemy champion is in her way mid-flight, she will crash into the champion and inflict the Aoe crash-zone there. Enemies farther from the center of the crash-zone are inflicted less damage, down to 50%.

This ability has a minimum range, and reduces 75% of damage Niina takes mid-flight. Dying or being interrupted mid-flight will result with Niina landing, inflicting the AoE crash-zone.

For 10 seconds, the cannon will become an indestructible object that reveals a 500 unit radius of sight.

Background

Lore

Since the young age, Niina has been a part of her family’s Yordle circus, becoming the star attraction of their show upon being introduced at age five. Her fame was so instant due to her ability to do any act of the show, whether if it was the trapeze, stilt walking, or the Yordle-cannonball. After years of circus acts and training, Niina was able to be the entire circus itself. With this realization, Niina parted from her family to travel alone and show her own circus show. But she knew very well that Yordle Land was not enough of a place to expand her fame. Making her attempt to show Valoran the dazzles of a Yordle circus, Niina would become the first Yordle to ever present a Yordle circus outside of Yordle Land.

But circus life outside Yordle Land was harsh. While there were places where she received a good crowd, many of her shows were close to deserted. Along with harsh travels and a lack of spending expenses, Niina’s life was already at a rough start. But, while she was performing in a town just north of the Great Barrier, a Demacian investor by the name Pierre Loyal, who was on vacation, watched the show and saw potential in this Yordle’s show. After the show, the investor asked Niina if he could fund her circus so it could become an even bigger and better circus with her fantastic skills. Niina was delighted to finally hear such good news and agreed. With this investment, the fame of Niina’s shows skyrocketed as she traveled from Bilgewater to even Zaun. And with every show, she displayed new acts, some that were more dangerous than ones she’s done before.

With a proposition given from Pierre, Niina entered the League of Legends to continue her fame. Pierre suggested this, believing that Niina can become a Champion who can show that anyone can find mutual entertainment and understanding.

  • The Demacian Investor, Pierre Loyal, who currently funds Niina’s shows, is a direct reference to Anselme-Pierre Loyal, one of the first renowned circus personalities.

Relations

  • Niina has a slightly off-sided rivalry with Draven for the spotlight. While he kills for entertainment, Niina believes entertainment does not include such violence. Although she has continually failed her arguments against him, he does love this kind of “rivalry”, although it can be considered more like Draven teasing the little yordle.

Development

The custom champion concepts I have in the folder under my desk began ever since I started playing League, which is only a mere 4, 5 months. Over the time, all my concept were loose and just daydreams, but as of recent, after learning more of the world of Runeterra, my concepts have received some spice, and I hope to release them to be seen and reviewed by everyone. Truthfully, Niina is one of the younger concepts, being made only a few weeks before I started collaborating with Nhan-Fiction. That was roughly around the start of June.

The aspiration for her design was actually from a simple thought I had: "Hmmm...I haven't created a concept for a yordle champion. I also lack female concepts..." From there, I wondered what would fit a yordle, and I was listening to music from Cirque du Soleil, specifically the music that I put as her "log-in theme". That is how I thought of this circus yordle.

At the start, her abilities were based on the more famous circus acts, such as juggling, knife throwing, pie throwing, trapeze and other acts, and I tried to fit that into her abilities. It was a big mistake, and made her concept look rushed and also too complicated. From there, I started collaborating with Nhan, and over 50 or so days, we together rewrote her concept. Soon enough, by early August, Niina was ready, thereafter released.

I was in search of an artist to draw an illustration for Niina, but that is something hard to get for free. In the end, I did not get the image, not because I gave up, but because I knew that I'm still new, and might get some more helping hands in the future, not now.

Personality-wise, I wanted Niina to be someone who was hard-working, dedicated to her circus life, but also playful. I also wanted to connect her to a champion, since none of my own champion concepts were related to her. That is why, just for the hilarity, I wanted to make her an entertainment "rival" to Draven. But knowing that Draven is so Draven that Draven-ing more than Draven is Draven-ly impossible, I did note that the rivalry is more on the lines of "Draven being Draven, Draven teases the little yordle as Draven-like as he always does".
