A Dreamer Is Born

In the city of Piltover, progress is always in pursuit. With the rise of hextech, it seems many great minds abandoned their original studies in order to explore this uncharted territory in hopes of making a name for themselves. For some, however, hextech sparked a different idea entirely. Such was the case for Beatrix Clemont, a brilliant machinist specializing in the automation of machines.

Born to a Piltovan father and Freljordian mother, Beatrix grew with both a sturdy physique as well as a sharp mind, inheriting the best of both her parents. Her favorite pastimes involved listening to the history of the wars waged by the Freljordian clans upon one another and spending time in her fathers workshop.

Her father was a respected expert in the field of robotics. His creations served many purposes from information processing to tending shop stalls to police task force. Even at home, he had several robots of his own personal creation tend to the upkeep of the house. At her young age, this became a normal sight for Beatrix and she felt at ease around the mechanized helpers. Sometimes she would even try to strike up a conversation with them, but with years passing and Beatrix's mind evolving and becoming more complex, the robots remained the same, never growing, never changing, never learning unless programmed.

As Beatrix grew older and spent more time studying her fathers works, she eventually decided to enlist in the Yordle Academy of Science & Progress and follow in his footsteps. While she found the field of hextech interesting, it was only second place to her interest in the field of automation. With her innate talents and driving passion, she graduated with flying colors, majoring in robotics and minoring in hexcrafting. Among her peers she was especially renowned for her ability to make use of discarded pieces of equipment, repurposing and refurbishing them into working parts of her creations. No circuit or magic crystal ever went unused or thrown away under her watch.

Beatrix dreamed of the existence of robots that would be more flexible and adaptive, able to take on an assortment of tasks without having the need of an engineer program the ability into them. The one thing that stumped her dream was the lack of information on the true nature of magic crystals used in hextech. As it is right now, the magic provided is used as nothing more than a power source at the hands of robots, but in the hands of a human the crystal contain untold potential, limited to the users creativity. From this, Beatrix concluded that what humans have that robots lack was "imagination", the ability to conceive thoughts based on the individual personality and thought process. This eventually led to a new questions - can imagination, something completely individualistic and unique to every person, be replicated and programmed? Would the magic crystals even respond to a "fake" consciousness trying to actively make use of it?

In order to begin her experiments, Beatrix constructed two robots. Distinct with male and female physique for the purpose of self awareness tests in the future, Beatrix named them "Jorgen" and "Carlotta". For the sake of comfort, the two robots are able to retain any information they process, so that repeated tests could be inputted more easily.

At first, they were the same as any other robot. Stoic and purposeless without human command. What Beatrix attempted was to study the behavior of magic crystals when used in the hands of robots. Day in and day out, Beatrix exposed her robots to a multitude of tasks, sometimes getting a result and sometime getting nothing. Eventually, she realized there was only so much she could do within the confines of her lab and Piltover in general. It was time to a field test.

Varying Results

Several days of preparation later, Beatrix and her mechanic companions set foot outside of Piltover for the first time in their lives. They traveled all across Valoran, following clues of magical artifacts. Some were true, others were not, but none of them solved the problem of imagination. It seemed no magic crystal used on Jorgen and Carlotta was able to power them enough to replicate the complexity of the human mind and instill it into a machine. They were all simply tools no different than a robot obeying its master.

Three years later, Beatrix decided it was time to return home for good. She felt relieved, but also disappointed. After traveling all over the world, Ionia, Demacia, Freljord, Noxus, even Bandle City, there was still no answer in sight. In a joking manner, Beatrix asked nobody in particular "I wonder what should I do when I get home?". Taking her question into serious consideration, Jorgen replied "Rest alone at home" while Carlotta replied "Visit your friends". This immediately caught Beatrixs' attention. Why would two robots, created exactly the same except their outer apprearance, propose different answers to the same question? It was strange, to say the least. Beatrix immediately turned to Jorgen and demanded an explanation, to which Jorgen replied that several years traveling may have left Beatrix weakened both physically and mentally, therefore she should take the time to recuperate herself to return to maximum efficiency. Next, she turned to Carlotta, demanding the same. In turn, Carlotta claimed that humans feel a sense of elation when surrounded by loved ones, causing a person to feel relieved and more energetic as humans are social creatures by nature, save for specific exceptions. This would in turn help Beatrix regain her mental and physical stability more than mere rest in further seclusion.

Beatrix was dumbfounded. Both had presented valid arguments, but contradicted each others methods of achieving the same goal. What in the world could be causing this divergence? When Beatrix opened up Jorgen and Carlotta, she discovered that their information retaining and analyzing functions operated not just when conducting tests, but for the entire time they have existed. For slightly over three years, Jorgen and Carlotta gathered a vast amount information, constantly analyzing, learning and concluding from their surroundings. Somewhere during that time, Jorgen and Carlotta developed different conclusions, different thought patterns or in other words, they developed individuality. How this happened was beyond Beatrixs' capability to explain. She could only describe this like how twins develop different personalities despite growing up under the same conditions.

She then remembered that during their adventures, the trio encountered multiple people with ownership of hextech artifacts, and several of them even demonstrated its power in their hands. With Jorgen and Carlotta exposed to such events, could they have also analyzed a way to use their hextech cores the same as a human? The answer was a bit more complicated than yes or no. While they demonstrated that some magic aptitude now exists in them due to developing individuality, they still lacked human-like intelligence. They did not think anything without Beatrixs' command nor did they have any desires to stimulate thought. As such, they could not invoke their new magical abilities without Beatrixs' direct intervention. Still, this was a huge step in the right direction towards achieving her childhood dream.

Exhilarated with the results, Beatrix decided that perhaps it was not time to return to Piltover just yet. With her two masterpieces following her everywhere, Beatrix is determined to discover even more of humanity, not for her own sake, but for the further growth of her partners into sentient beings.

Mix & Match

In this iteration of Beatrix sees a mixture of gameplay mechanics of her previous iterations. The core mechanics of Scrap and Teamwork, as well as the level 1 ultimate of the second iteration are still present while also working in tandem with the original robots of the first iteration, now more polished and with a clear role and intention. The only new ability in Beatrix's arsenal is Giant Splash Grenade, a tool of her own for when Jorgen and Carlotta are destroyed. The biggest comeback in her kit is that of her drones, previously replaced by a single drone named Loki. By being able to assign a drone to Jorgen and Carlotta, if emphasizes their place as Beatrix's teammates and not just as tools.

Divide & Conquer

One of the biggest problems I tried solving with Beatrix was the issue of gameplay balance, fun and interactivity divided between multiple characters. No champion to this day has gameplay revolving around actively controlling pets as a core mechanic and as such it was difficult to find a proper way to pull this off. Where in previous iterations the robots were completely static (i.e. boring) or autonomous in different measures (i.e. incoherent), in this iteration you can control both Jorgen and Carlotta, but only one at a time while the other is removed from the battlefield.

Jorgen is now more characterized as a bulky fighter, having a much higher health pool and defenses than Carlotta. He is a slow melee attacker that, when engaging champions, slowly builds up more and more attack and movement speed over 10 seconds. On Beatrix's command, Jorgen will launch a short range missile at his target which deals extra magic damage.

Carlotta is now characterized as a very passive approach to support, giving off a permanent aura that helps allies and debuffs enemies in her range. While she is capable of basic attacking for magic damage, she has no significant form of damage except prolonged exposure to her damaging aura. Spending scrap stores the amount spent as charges, allowing you to expend them in the form of a shield for you and your allies, Carlotta included.

Working Together

One of the core aspects I tried implementing in Beatrix is that she and her robots are a team, working in tandem to achieve success in the game, but it was never present in her previous iterations.

The first iteration only used them as passive buffs which could be just as easily implemented not as robots, while the second iteration gave them too much power and flexibility, while Beatrix lost no power from losing her robots.

This time around, Beatrixs kit is literally divided equally between her and her robots. The Q is an ability dedicated to whichever robot is currently in battle, Jorgen or Carlotta. The W, now having seen the return of the original drones, can be cast not just on champions but onto your active robot itself, giving you the option to utilize the drones' unique proximity mechanic by yourself. The E provides an ability that is not hampered by Beatrix being without her robots, and creates special zones that augment Jorgen and Carlotta's abilities, granting them a little less linear gameplay.

This time around, when a robot is destroyed, it enters stasis and starts recovering itself to full health over a duration. While recovering, their respected ability becomes Repair. This ability, when toggled on, drains a percentage of your max scrap every second and causes your robots to health three times more health per second, effectively reducing the waiting time to their full recovery.

One final way to solidify Beatrix and her robots as partners are the way they depend on one another. The robots gain much of their power through Beatrix, and vice versa. Jorgen and Carlotta gain much of their power from the use of Giant Splash Grenade, but the effects they gain do not scale with ability level, but rather have a static base and an increase in power from Beatrix's AP, meaning whenever Beatrix grows stronger, so do they. This is also apparent in the robots health and defenses, which scale per champion level but, again, along with Beatrix's total AP. On the other side of the spectrum, when Beatrix is without her robots, she either has to rely on her Combat Drones, which are best used in tandem with teammates, or her Giant Splash Grenade, which has a relatively long cooldown to compensate for its large area and high damage, making it a one time nuke attack. This leaves Beatrix much more helpless, but not entirely, which means you will want to get to a safe spot and Repair your robots out of destruction as fast as possible.

The Old & The New

Another challenge that rose with this new iteration was the relevance of Scrap. In the first iteration Scrap was used as a means of healing Jorgen, as well as a cost for drones and casting her ultimate Junkyard Overdrive and lastly a source of ability scaling. In the second iteration, where her robots had a multitude of functionalities, Scrap was used to reload mortar shells into Odin and enhance Freyja's shield, and potential used to recharge Loki's electric capacitors for his Siege Mode.

Working on this iteration, I found out there was a wall in front of me as to how to use Scrap in a third unique way. While it made sense thematically that scrap can be used to boost robots, build drones and create explosives, it wasn't a good enough reason to exist as a replacement for mana. That's when I decided to repurpose the old ammunition system from the second iteration. Small and consistent expenditures like Repair, granting allies drones and restocking Jorgens missiles, makes you spend small amount of scrap but quickly and over a duration, so there is a constant give and take between the scrap you gain and scrap you spend. Scrap also doesn't increase in a sudden boom anymore, but rather per level, meaning every 3 to 4 levels you gain is an additional ability to cast or missile to reload.

Aftermath of Change

Beatrix is now in her third iteration, and in it she has become something entirely else since the initial concept. While originally designed as a tank support, she then evolved into a support and controller and finally is now more of a mage than a support, with only a shield to her credit as a supportive ability. I do feel slightly bad for straying from the original support concept, with the rise of mages in the bot lane as part of the new meta, I don't think this end result is such a bad thing.

In the end, it's not necessarily about designing a support champion anymore for me. It's just about creating something unique, that is mine and I can look back on with pride in the future.

Third Times' The Charm

Beatrix

 • Same Old, But She's Young: Beatrix is still the same support/mage/controller as before, only much more in control!
 • Thanks For Playing: All of the original robots from the first iteration have made a comeback!

Grenade Bag

 • Oooohhh Pretty Colors: Beatrix now has her own, independent ability. She can toss a grenade that deals magic damage. Too boring for you? Well how about this then: each grenade also an area of effect based on the type of grenade you choose to toss, changing between damage over time, movement slow, and defense reduction.
 • Better With Friends: Effect areas caused by tossed grenades grant special capabilities to the returned Jorgen and Carlotta, giving them more ample playstyles.

Jorgen

 • Did you Lose Weight?: Jorgen is no longer a tank, instead he now resembles the likes of Renekton or Riven, a bulky physical fighter using melee attacks. In addition to reduced ranged damage, Jorgen takes reduced melee damage that scales with your ultimate ability.
 • New Toy: Jorgen's attacks place a stack of "Target Locked" on his enemies. On the third stack, he launches a homing missile that deals magic damage. Jorgen only carries a limited amount of missiles and must be reloaded with new ones. If stepping inside a zone created by a grenade, the next missile Jorgen launches gains a new effect: damage over time, movement slow or damage output reduction.
 • Faster, Stronger, Better: Jorgens related ability is now "Overdrive", allowing you to boost his attack speed, movement speed and damage reduction for a duration.

Carlotta

 • Absolutely Radiant: Carlotta now emits an aura that helps heal allies. The auras range is based on the amount of battery charge, decreasing in size as the battery drains. The battery can be recharged for the cost of scrap and lives longer before draining, scaling with your ultimate ability.
 • Magical Presence: When passing through grenade zones, Carlotta's auras gain a permanent new effect: damage over time, attack speed slow or periodically blinding.

Combat Drones

 • Super Shock Bros: The drones are back in full force. This time around, they have their own set of stats and are no longer limited by a set duration. Their health is relatively low and therefore they may end up dead from a single strong area ability.
 • Alone but Together: Drones can now be assigned now only to champions, but to Jorgen and Beatrix as well. The drones behave the same with your robots as they would any champion, targeting the same enemy as their ally and shocking their targets when two or more drones are in close proximity.

Call:Jorgen/Carlotta

 • Not Obvious Enough?: You can now freely switch between Jorgen and Carlotta as your active robots. As you level this ability up higher, your robots abilities become stronger, however with the exception of Jorgens melee damage reduction, all of your robots base stats rise with Beatrixs' level and ability power.

Scrap - Every 5 / 4 / 3 minions, both friend and enemy, that die near Beatrix will drop 10 / 20 / 30 Scrap that lasts 6 seconds, which Beatrix picks up by standing near it. Scoring kills or assists against enemy champions causes them to drop double the amount of Scrap instantly.

Beatrix can only store up to 100 / 200 / 300 Scrap.

Starting at level 6, Beatrix gathers scrap passively at a rate of 1% max Scrap per second when out of combat.

Teamwork - Beatrix starts the game with all her robotic companions summoned. Each of them has 300 / 450 / 600 (+200% AP) max health and takes reduced damage from Ranged role ranged sources except turret attacks. When a robot is destroyed, Beatrix gains its hex core, turning her into the source of its respective ability. After 15 seconds the destroyed robot is summoned back.

Staying far away from the robots for an extended period of time will cause them to teleport back to Beatrix and follow her until commanded otherwise.

N/A

Past Mistakes

Two of my biggest ideas for Beatrix were interactivity and single player team force. I stated before that support champions are inherently boring because they either repeat the same crowd control combo or just cast 'heal-shield-cooldown-repeat' throughout the entirety of a game. I attempted to make Beatrix a different kind of support by giving her a plethora of things to do while playing in order to make her active and engaging.

How I implemented this by giving Beatrix the ability to summon a multitude of robots, each having their own role - Jorgen the tank, Drones as fighters and Carlotta as the support. With the creation of the Scrap mechanic which replaced mana, I thought I could make Beatrix interactive by having her spend Scrap to repair or boost the robots, but instead it created a situation where you just summon your robots, let them do their thing, and occasionally spend some Scrap for a menial labor rather than meaningful gameplay or boosting just one of them while the rest just stood there.

Another minor aspect to Beatrix was that when the robots are destroyed, she could pick up their cores to boost herself to become relevant. This was a poor design choice because once the effects of the cores wore off, Beatrix without her robots was basically a meat shield until their cooldowns finished counting down and she could summon them again.

A Step Back

When it has been brought to my attention how passive Beatrix' actual gameplay is, I decided to take a step back and see where it all went wrong. Turns out, it was pretty early, back when I decided she would be a tank. This role is innately passive because what tanks do is carry the burden of damage intake and sometimes disrupt enemy teams, but nothing much beyond that. Inadvertently, I ended up doing the same thing, just through summons instead of Beatrix herself, which just made it worse.

When I realized this, I decided to take a look at some of the more active and flexible support champions in the game, like Sona and Karma, which have more plentiful gameplay options at their disposal. That's when it hit me that I need to make Beatrix a caster and completely overhauled her position from Tank/Support to Support/Mage, which gave me greater flexibility in designing her kit.

The Coordinator

Along with Beatrix's new role came a new title - The Coordinator. One of the biggest flaws in the Junkyard Bastion was that the robots were not playing as like teammates but rather as just normals buffs. They were either static in place or just following a target ally and that's what I sought to fix first.

To acheive this, I completely scrapped (*ba dum tss*) the ultimate ability Junkyard Overdrive and replaced it with Shift Mode, which switches the a single robot between offensive and defensive behavior while also granting a small passive buff to Beatrix. Naturally, with this new mechanic also came a huge change to the robots. They now have new names, their own health bars and are subject to all combat behavior that applies to minions. Each robot also has different form of movement controls to make them feel a little more unique and alleviate the hassle of too much micro management.

Unconventional And Indirect

I always thought supports could be much more than a healing and/or shielding machine. Disruptions, buffs and debuffs, are just as crucial to a game but somehow they go under the radar compared to damage control skills. For this reason I gave Beatrix a variety of utility skills, making her a sort of pseudo-controller. This is because two of Beatrix's new robots create danger zones for enemies who cross them because they run the risk of being affected by the negative effects these zones incur. Your enemies will want to avoid these danger zones, creating a sort of home field advantage for your team if you can force enemies inside.

Another mistake I fixed for Beatrix was her own relevance. With only the robots as the source of her skills, she herself had no power related to her, even as a tank. By changing the Core passive to the new Teamwork passive, Beatrix is no longer a summoner but instead a caster. Giving her robots their own health bar and removing the burden of having to summon them gave me the space to make each robot a flexible machine with a distinct purpose. The robots are still the source point of Beatrix' active abilities, but now when one of them is destroyed, two things happen: the passive buff they provide is boosted and Beatrix automatically becomes the new source of their respective abilities (albeit with some changes). This means Beatrix actually becomes stronger when she loses her robots instead of weaker like her previous design made her.

Meet the New Crew

 • Jorgen has been replaced with Odin. He does not move at all unless commanded to.
 • Axel, Butch and Crash have been replaced with Loki, who follows close by you unless commanded otherwise.
 • Carlotta has been replaced with Freyja, which follows ahead or behind you and cannot be issued movement commands.
 • As an exception, staying a large distance away from your robots for 90 seconds will cause them to abandon their position and teleport back to you, after which they will follow you until commanded otherwise.

Artillery Mode

This is the offensive mode, giving the robots more aggressive abilities and making Beatrix lean more towards the mage role.

Odin acts as a mortar cannon. He is rooted in place and fires shells at a long distance, knocking enemies away if they are close enough to the center of the blast. Odin can only store a finite number of shells and requires Beatrix to reload and operate him in this mode. This mode allows you to disrupt the enemy team from a fairly long distance, but shells travel relatively slow, giving quicker enemies time to react. While not very powerful against one or two enemies, in a team fight where 3 or 4 enemy players are clustered together, the ability to disperse them could make or break a fight, shifting your teams focus to an isolated enemy champion and turning the tides.

Loki follows close by Beatrix, attacking enemies within a short range. Beatrix can command Loki to fly to a target location, dropping a bomb that deals magic damage and creates an area that debuffs enemy champions, reducing their defensive stats. Smart enemies will want to avoid this zone as it leaves them vulnerable. In a team fight you may sometimes want to sacrifice the damage output in favor of dropping this bomb on your own team, creating a sort of home field for you to fight in.

Freyja will automatically move slightly ahead of Beatrix, periodically marking enemy champions to increase their incoming damage for a period of time. Spending scrap allows her to boost teammates AD and AP, making her especially effective in the heat of a team fight but also a likely target to be destroyed first among the three robots.

Siege Mode

This is the defensive mode, giving the robots more protective abilities and making Beatrix lean more towards the support role.

Odin becomes a movable barrier and passively generates up to 3 charges. When Odin is commanded to move, he quickly dashes to the targeted location. Upon reaching his new location, he deploys a barrier that blocks all champion projectiles for 1 second and completely negating them. While on relatively short cooldown, charges take a static 10 seconds to reload, so it is important to know when to block with Odin. Reaction time is also important for this skill because barriers are only deployed when the dash ends.

Loki becomes a like heavy cruiser in this mode. He is capable of firing at multiple targets who enter his patrol range, applying the same slow-slower-stun combo the previous drones would have cast. The huge difference here is that at level 5, Loki is capable of firing at the entire enemy team individually, so sending him out to the middle of clustered enemy champions of 3 or 4 could potentially have devastating results if they do not leave his range immediately.

Freyja will follow slighty behind Beatrix. In this mode, she grants a shield which refreshes if no damage has been taken for a long time. The shield has two unique features - it is relatively weaker than common support shields and can be boosted. As long as you remain in Siege Mode, you can activate Freyja's ability to permanently boost the shield she generates at the expense of Scrap. Switching into Artillery Mode, however, returns the shield to base power.

With enough patience and planning, Freyja can provide shielding for your teammates similarly to Locket of the Iron Solari Locket of the Iron Solari. If you actually build LotIS and let Freyja;s shield build up, you have what is probably the strongest team shielding potential in the game when you use both together. Since the shield only returns 12 seconds after not taking any damage, it is powerful enough to defend a team but does not refresh so often that it breaks the game.

Hopefully Done Right

With this new design, I hope to have created a champion that is far more active as a support, whether it's through Artillery Mode's long range harassment and damage output or Siege Mode's supportive and defensive effects. By giving each of the robots a different form of movement control, I hope to solidify the core idea that Beatrix is the leader of a single champion team and by supporting your robots with your scrap investments and proper coordination you indirectly support your teammates as well.

Massive Overhaul

Beatrix

 • Career Change: Beatrix no longer plays as a tank, instead her main role is now support and her secondary role is mage. Her stats have been changed accordingly to reflect this.
 • New Title: Beatrix is now titled The Coordinator to better reflect her play style.

Innate

 • Out With The Old!: Removed Core from One Man's Junk. This mechanic had no room with Beatrix's transition into the mage-like support role.
 • In With The New!: Added new passive mechanic Teamwork. Now Beatrix's robo-friends all start the game with her. They are the source point of her skills and should they be destroyed, Beatrix temporarily takes their place as the source of their respective skills without suffering from any related drawbacks such as costs or negative effects.

Ultimate Ability

 • Quantity Over Quality?: This ability has seen the biggest change and drags the entire kit along with it. Junkyard Overdrive has been replaced with Siege/Artillery Mode, an interchangeable skill that switches the robots between defensive and offensive behavior while also granting a small passive effect to Beatrix and themselves.

Odin

 • No Longer Cold: Jorgen has been replaced with Odin.
 • Bastille: In Siege Mode, Odin is capable of blocking enemy champion projectiles.
 • Mortar: In Artillery Mode he is rooted in place and can be operated by Beatrix to launch mortar shells at enemies.

Loki

 • Mk. II: The stacking drones have been replaced with a single drone named Loki.
 • Patrol: In Siege Mode, Loki patrols an area as commanded by Beatrix, attacking any nearby champion and causing the same effect as the previous drones did when they were within range of each other.
 • Bomb Run: In Artillery Mode, Loki stays near Beatrix until she commands him to move, bombarding an area in a straight line and leaving behind a blazing trail that deals additional periodic damage.

Freyja

 • Early Retirement: Carlotta has been replaced with Freyja.
 • Shieldmaiden: In Siege Mode, Freyja grants a shield that refreshes if you have not taken damage for a certain amount of time. Spending Scrap increases the base shields power as long as you stay in Siege Mode up to a certain amount.
 • Valkyrie: In Artillery Mode, Freyja marks enemies, causing them to take increased damage. Activating this ability spends Scrap to temporarily boost your teammates attack damage and ability power.

Jan 28th, 2017

 • Needs A Shower: The Bombardment ability has been replaced with Dirty Bomb.
 • Not a Picky Eater: Odin's Barriers now block all champion projectiles instead of 2/4/6/8/10 projectiles.

Jan 30th, 2017

 • Identity Change: The innate Junk has been renamed as Scrap.
 • Team Player: Odin is now capable of firing in Artillery Mode even when not being operated by Beatrix. He will target whoever Beatrix last attacked once every 6 seconds.
 • Battery Life: The duration of Odins barriers have been increased to 1/1.5/2/2.5/3 seconds from 1 second at all levels.
 • Self-Sustained: Zones created by dirty bombs Beatrix dropped now grant allies increased healing from all sources instead of bonus health regen.
 • Binoculars: Increased the size of Loki's Patrol zone to 500 from 400.
 • Nothing Lasts Forever: Freyja's shield decays when allies are outside her effect range for 3 seconds.
 • Jhinspired: Increased the amount of times Freyja's shield can be boosted to 4 from 3.
 • Tenacious B: Changed the passive buff granted by Siege Mode. Beatrix now gains Tenacity instead of damage reduction.

Jan 31st, 2017

 • Gatherer: Reduced dropped scrap at early levels and increased at later levels to 10/20/30 from 15/20/25.
 • Derivative: Reduce max scrap capacity at early levels and increased at later levels to 100/200/300 from 150/200/250.
 • Better Focus: Reduced the scrap conversion of Hunt from 30% current scrap to 25%.
 • Equivalent Exchange: The base shield of Protect has been increased at early levels and reduced at later levels to 70/90/110/130/150 from 40/80/120/160/200.
 • Cost Efficient: Increased the amount of scrap investments of Protect to 5 from 4.
 • Impatient: Reduced the cooldown of Protect to 6 seconds from 7.

Feb 2nd, 2017

 • Scalability Reducded the amount of scrap investments of Protect at early levels to 3/3/4/4/5 from 5 at all levels.

One Man's Junk

Junk - Every 4th (friend or foe) non champion unit that dies near Beatrix will drop 15/20/25 Scrap for her to pick up by being near it. Beatrix can store up to 150/200/250 Scrap. Enemy champions that Beatrix killed or assisted in killing will instantly drop double the amount of Scrap. Scrap remains on the ground for up to 6 seconds before disappearing. Jungle monsters do not drop Scrap.

Core - Whenever one of Beatrix's robotic companions is destroyed or its duration is over, it will drop its hex core for Beatrix to pick up within the next 6 seconds by standing near it.

 • Jorgen's Core- Grants a shield equal to 10/12.5/15% of Beatrix's maximum Health.
 • Drone Core- Beatrix's next basic attack against an enemy unit within 10 seconds will stun them for 1/1.25/1.5 seconds. Cannot be applied to the same enemy again for the next 5 seconds. No more than 3 cores can be loaded.
 • Carlotta's Core- Heal Beatrix by 10/15/20% her missing health and nearest ally champion by 30% that much.

Info
 • No additional details.

Call: Jorgen

Summon Jorgen the Coldhearted to defend an ally champion by absorbing a portion of their incoming premitigation damage.

 • damage absorption: 10/15/20/25/30%
 • Health: 200/250/300/350/400 (+50% bonus health}
 • Armor: 40/45/50/55/60 (+10% armor)
 • Magic Resist: 30/35/40/45/50 (+10% magic resist

Jorgen cannot attack but can be directly damaged by attacks and skills like normal units. Enemies that basic attack Jorgen or his bonded ally will have their attack speed reduced by 15% for 1 second.

If Jorgen and Beatrix are more than 1500 units away for 3 seconds, Jorgen deactivates (no longer absorbs damage). After 1 minute in this state Jorgen will self destruct.

While Jorgen is active, this skill becomes Command: Jorgen.

Command: Jorgen

On Jorgen Cast - Consume scrap to heal Jorgen by 15% his maximum health.

On Ally Cast - Send Jorgen to protect a different ally. This does not restore his health.

Info
 • No additional details.

Call: Drone Brother

Passive - As long as Beatrix has more than 20% maximum Scrap, she will consume 10% of her current Scrap every 5 seconds seconds to add a stack of Drone Ready, up to 3 max.

 • Magic Damage: 0.00013020833333333 (+2% bonus health) (+10% current Scrap)
 • Attack Speed: 2.7582491582492

Active - Beatrix calls one of the Drone Brothers, Axel, Butch or Crash, to follow behind an ally for 20 seconds. The drones deal magic damage to the closest enemy champion within 300 units.

Beatrix can only place one drone on a single ally and only 3 can be active at all times. Drones cannot be targeted by skills but can be destroyed after 2 basic attacks. If their ally is rooted or stunned, they cease firing until the effect is over.

If two or more drones are within firing range of each other, their attacks become an electric shock that slows their target by 30% for 1 second. A second shock will slow enemies by 60% for an additional 1 second and a third shock will stun them for 0.75 seconds. Enemies cannot be stunned or slowed by this again for the next 6 seconds.

Info
 • No additional details.

Call: Carlotta

Beatrix calls down Carlotta the Nurse to a target location for 8 seconds to constantly heal Beatrix and nearby ally champions in a short range every second, increasing by 1% per 1% their missing health.

 • Healing: 8.3333333333333E-6 (+1% maximum health) (+10% current scrap)

Carlotta has 3 HP and can only be targeted by basic attacks.

Info
 • No additional details.

Junkyard Overdrive

Passive - Gather Scrap passively at a rate of 1% max Scrap per second.

 • jorgen's healing: % of max scrap consumed as max health
 • Drone Duration: 3/4/5 seconds
 • Shield: 100/110/120% consumed Scrap (+5% maximum health)

Overdrive: Carlotta - Summoning Carlotta grants a shield to all allied champions within her range for 4 seconds. If Carlotta is already active, this skill will reposition her before granting the shield. After this ability is used Carlotta's healing is calculated with 0 Scrap and her active duration is increased by 4 seconds.

Overdrive: Jorgen - Summon Jorgen for 6 seconds with double max health and bonus armor and magic resist equal to 50% of the Scrap consumed. While in this state, Jorgen will absorb double the amount of damage for his ally, Beatrix is prevented from casting Command: Jorgen and his bonded ally is slowed by 5%. If Jorgen is already active at the time Junkyard Overdrive is invoked, you may cast this ability on Jorgen or an ally. This will grant Jorgen the same stat boosts and also heal him by a percantage of his max health equal to the percentage of max Scrap consumed. When the effect is over, Jorgen will be destroyed.

The Girl in the Junkyard

Zaun and Piltover, cities that experiment and study to no end. How many experiments occur in the span of a single day? a week? a month? What do they do with all the failures, broken parts and accidents? Of course, they toss it all away, only to end up in the junkyard, home and birthplace of Beatrix.

Her mother was a teacher from Zaun. She was not afflicted with the madness of discovery at all costs but could not say the same for her students. Her father was a fairly successful mechanic in one of the districts of Piltover and was assigned to test a multi-tool wrench invented by the renowned Jayce, which he has kept to this day. Both had their place in their respective cities and yet they decided to leave that place, wanting a life different, but not far away. That is when they decided to claim ownership of the junkyard, located slightly outside of the cities' borders and build their lives there. Just barely one year later, the couple had their first child.

From the first moments of her life, Beatrix took a deep interest in her fathers garage. As a former mechanic, the man knew his way around machines and built all sorts of interesting gadgets to keep his daughter entertained. She absorbed more and more knowledge by watching him work until one day she astounded her parents by reanimating a decommissioned robot at the age of 10. Her mother decided to take it upon herself to nurture Beatrix' curious nature and home school her while her father decided to pass on his accumulated experience. The childs curiosity was apparently boundless and with each passing day, through trial & error in her fathers garage and the home schooling provided by her mother, Beatrix became more adept in the field of mechanics and robotics.

The Undercity

When Beatrix had reached adulthood, she felt as though she had learned all she could from her parents and the junk around her. Despite her mother's warnings, in her naivete Beatrix decided to try and enroll to an academy in Zaun, hoping to reach new heights in the field of automation in machines. Her interviewers, impressed with her mechanical prowess despite a lack of formal education, accepted Beatrix as one of their students. Despite the city's poor condition, having grown up with nothing but junk around her made it easy to adapt and at first, she enjoyed learning and tinkering with brand new equipment that was never accessible in her father's garage. It wasn't long, though, before the true nature of Zaun's scientists dawned upon her. She was exposed to the horrible sights of human augmentation, weaponizations and illegal experiments that were rampant throughout the city and yet her fellow classmates acted as if this were the norm. As time went on and the assignments given to Beatrix grew more horrific and revolting, she refused to follow them, eventually leading to her expulsion. Now seeking somewhere else to expand her knowledge, Beatrix set her sights to Piltover.

New Heights

The difference was apparent the moment Beatrix stepped outside the elevator. An illustrious city, machines in every nook and cranny running it as perfect as clockwork. Everywhere was brimming with light, merchants were in abundance, and yet something felt off in her heart. Apparently, her countryside demeanor was very much out of place. Despite feeling the stares of the surrounding Piltovans, Beatrix was determined to apply for a college nonetheless. With the knowledge she gained in Zaun and her accumulated experience since childhood, Beatrix was just barely accepted. At first, being able to study with a guilt free conscience greatly motivated Beatrix, but the longer she stayed the more she stuck out like a sort thumb among her fellow students, not to mentioned without proper formal education she simply could not keep up with her studies. This situation lasted for nearly 8 months before there was no other choice but to expel Beatrix due to a mixture of prejudice and poor performance.

The Bastion is Born

Now, just like the junk, scrap and her parents, Beatrix headed the junkyard, rejected by both Zaun and Piltover. Though she felt this failure weighing heavily on her heart, the moment she stepped back into the junkyard, it was no longer the place she knew as a little girl. The piles of metal and wires didn't seem like worthless trash anymore, instead brimming with potential she never saw before and a sudden surge of emotions and thoughts flooded her mind like never before. Barely greeting her parents with her return, Beatrix immediately took to work. Taking her fathers trusted multi-tool wrench with her, she locked herself in the garage for nearly 4 days straight, only coming out when more pieces needed to be gathered. On the fourth day, her parents stood outside and called their daughter to come back out. As they did, the door slowly raised, revealing inside not just their daughter, but an additional 5 robots alongside her. Beatrix wore a smile so victorious on her face it it was like her spirit recovered and then grew tenfold. Now accompanied by nothing short of a small army of her owned creation, made of junk no less, Beatrix set out to show the world that it doesn't take reckless morals or fancy education to become a scientist, just a spark of passion and the willpower to follow it.

How Is Beatrix Unique?

Beatrix is my own take of a utility tank. One of the biggest problems with supports today is that they're outright boring. Even as initiators, you just do the same repetitive and predictable combo. In order to solve this problem I decided to make Beatrix a very flexible and active support, giving you an assortment of playmaking options without giving you that "well, time to wait for this ability to cooldown" too much. I'll explain how this is implemented shortly.

What Is Scrap?

Beatrix utilizes a unique resource. Instead of mana, she collects Scrap from any dead minion or enemy champion she helped killing. Scrap plays a huge part in Beatrix's kit because it is both a source of scaling as well as an expendable resource for certain skills. A defensive Beatrix can stay back and collected Scrap only from her own minions, keeping her relatively safe, but a Beatrix that dares to also collect Scrap dropped between enemy minions waves will be rewarded by having higher scaling on her abilities due to the extra Scrap.

Staying Active

Now that I've covered her most basic mechanic, I want to address how I implemented an anti-boredom "wait for cooldown" play style. One of the first robots I designed was Jorgen, who's purpose is to defend a single ally by absorbing some of their incoming damage. As a mechanic, Beatrix can expend a certain amount of Scrap and repair Jorgen, restoring his health. Another form of expenditure is maintaining Scrap at 20% or higher in order to passively spend some of it to gain a drone stack. By constantly having to play between gathering and expending Scrap, there's almost never a dull moment for you, especially in the early game.

Working Together

The other problem I addressed earlier, boring skill combinations, is addressed via the workings of her active and innate abilities. All of Beatrix's active abilities give initiation power to her ally more than herself. By placing Jorgen to absorb damage and a drone to dish out damage on a single ally, as well as a drone on yourself, your ally is likely the one to confidently charge in head-first into combat instead of you, with good reason. However, that is not to say Beatrix doesn't have any engaging potential herself. When one of her robots is destroyed, she can pick up the core left behind the same way she gathers fallen Scrap. These cores grant Beatrix a shield, a heal or a stun to her next basic attack, depending on the core she picked up.

The One Fatal Decision

Upon reaching level 6, your true potential shines. Your ultimate means you are no longer limited to the Scrap dropped by others and gain 1% max Scrap per second. This is to counter the inherent problem of Scrap being reliant on dead things to gather, which won't happen as often during the mid game where the focus is objective control. Additionally this skill can be as powerful as you decide. It costs 50% max Scrap to use, but keep in mind Scrap is not just a resource, it is also a source of power for your skills, meaning the more patiently you wait and gather Scrap, the more powerful your next boosted ability will become.
