Valoran is the northern continent of Runeterra. Valoran is connected to the now Shuriman Continent through a small artificial land bridge where modern day Piltover and Zaun are located, which was once the center location of the continent before the event that shattered the continent into two. While the most well-known regions of the continent are Demacia, Noxus and Freljord, there are also hundreds of smaller states and nations that are not part of them. Almost all nations and factions of present-day Runeterra are based on Valoran.

The Rune Wars
Until only twenty years ago, Runeterra was on a collision course with disaster. As quickly as Runeterra’s denizens would band together in ancient times as tribes, opposing tribes would war to settle their disputes. No matter the era, the preferred choice of warfare has always been magical. Armies would be enhanced or decimated by spell and rune alike. Champions made the most of magical items forged for them as they led or supported armies. Summoners – often the de facto leaders of Valoran’s political forces – would unleash mighty magical powers directly against foes and their holdings with little regard for consequence. With such an abundance of raw magical power at their disposal, there was little motivation for summoners to explore more environmentally-friendly forms of warfare.

  +
History
Within the last two hundred years, however, the dangers of unchecked magical warfare began to expose the fragility of Runeterra to everyone residing in Valoran. The last two Rune Wars drastically altered the geophysical landscape of Valoran, even after magical energy was focused on restoring it. Violent earthquakes and horrific magically-fueled storms made life on Valoran challenging, even before factoring in the horror of warfare on the populace. It was theorized that another unchecked Rune War would tear the world asunder.

The Three Sisters
  +
Lissandra#Background
  +
In an ancient primordial world long before advanced civilizations, the Three Sisters (Avarosa, Serylda and Lissandra) were born. Each sought to harness the powers at war, and each paid a terrible price with one of their senses. After losing her sight to the primal god Volibear, Lissandra chose instead to walk in dreams. As she navigated the fitful visions of those around her, she realized only she could see the darkness below for what it was: the lingering abyss of the Void promised not only an ending, but infinity. It was death, both dangerous and full of potential. Unknown to her sisters, Lissandra struck a deal on their behalf with the god-like entities she had communed with — the Watchers would grant them near-immortality in exchange for preparing Runeterra for the coming of the Void.

  +
The three sisters and their most powerful followers were named Iceborn. Those with this ability to withstand the worst of the numbing frost would be spared until the very end.
The League of Legends
As a direct response to the world’s growing physical and political instability, Valoran’s key magicians – including many powerful summoners – came to the conclusion that conflicts needed to be resolved in a controllable and systemic way. They formed an organization called the League of Legends, whose purpose was to oversee the orderly resolution of political conflict in Valoran. Housed in the Institute of War, the League would be given the authority by Valoran’s political entities to govern the outcomes of the organized conflict they would administer.--->

  +
However, as her sisters grew restless while the Void did not care for platitudes, Lissandra failed to prevent it from erupting into the mortal world in the far north, and with it, Lissandra's hidden allegiance to the Watchers became undeniable. In time, Avarosa grew tired of their servitude and united the Iceborn, rallying them against their masters. The final stand against the Watchers took place on the bridge crossing the Howling Abyss. In that moment, Lissandra sacrificed her sisters and the allies they had gathered, entombing the Watchers beneath a glacial barrier of True Ice that could never be melted, in order to prevent the world from being consumed.
Races
Valoran is home to many denizens. Most of which are humans but there are other races as well:

  +
Lissandra soon discovered that even this elemental power was not enough. The monstrous beings she had frozen were merely slumbering, slowly tainting the True Ice around them into something darker. Now, they wandered through Lissandra's dreams as easily as she had theirs, and always she would wake, terrified, professing her loyalty to the chilling eternity they promised.
* Angels: With immense power and a dedication to their cause bordering on fanaticism, these immortals are alien to the world of Runeterra. Originating from a universe far, far away, these winged guardians wage an endless war against the tides of darkness. Seeking perfection, they are blessed with insurmountable power and ancient weapons. Despite this, not all angels are true to the cause, choosing that same dark path their fellow angels fight against. Two of these angels exist in Runeterra, Kayle and Morgana, both immensely powerful, both strong in their convictions, and both with a strong resentment for each other.

* Ascendant: An ancient immortal race that existed in the lifespan of the Shuriman Empire. Formerly humans, they were granted the right to Ascend through an ancient ritual that involved the fabled Sun Disc. Their forms are usually that of anthropomorphic animals, but disruption of the ritual can cause unpredictable results, as seen with Xerath, the Magus Ascended. With the fall of Shurima, the Ascended disappeared from the world, leaving only Nasus, who stands watch over the Empire's ruins, but through unfortunate circumstances some ascended have returned to the world, bringing with them Shurima's lost legacy.

* Brackerns: An ancient race of large, crystalline scorpions that inhabited Kalamanda, Crystal Scar. During the Rune Wars, the brackern went into hibernation deep beneath the ground, waiting for the Rune Wars to end. The first of them, Skarner, was awakened by a massive magical disturbance caused by Zilean Temporal Stasis Bubble.

<!-- Need expanding! -->

* Celestials: Ancient beings with great powers that are told in old fables to live in Runeterra's constellations. Most of them are powerful deities or guardians. So far, only 2 of them are known in the League: Soraka and Bard.

* Darkin: A demon-like, winged race of humanoids. They are shown to wield tremendous powers over physical and mental psyches of mortals, as demonstrated by Aatrox. Only five remain in existence, with only three of those five known to history in some way.

* Dragons: Winged, fire-breathing reptiles that can reach near-giant sizes over their long, long lifespans, they are the indisputable ruler of the skies. Both fearsome and majestic, dragons have a society that revolves around strength and might and because of their egoistic and narcissistic pride, mixing their blood with that of races outside of dragonkind are seen as an abomination, a cancer that must be eradicated utterly. Many dragons persecute such defiled creations and their perpetrators to no end, a thing that Shyvana, and her deceased father found out firsthand.

* Fae: Playful, winged, humanoid creatures that are smaller than the yordles. They inhabit the forests of the latter. They have capricious abilities of transfiguration and matter distortion and their glades seem to exist in dimensions far removed from the normal flow of time. One can only enter their glades when invited by a Fae, as Pix has done with the yordle Lulu.

* Iceborn: An ancient race of humans, they were granted immortality, incredibly power and icey forms by another ancient race known as the Frozen Watchers, in return for the Iceborn's servitude. They served the Watchers for a time before they rebelled, seeking their freedom from their masters in a mighty war which they won, but their society would later fall in to a civil war known as the War of the Three Sisters, dividing Freljord's people for all time and driving the Iceborn to near extinction. The only known living Iceborn is Lissandra . The Iceborn played an important role in shaping current Freljordian history.

* Marai: A sea-dwelling race who resemble both humans and aquatic creatures. They live on the sea floor and rely on the light of an artifact known as the Moonstone to survive. The Moonstone's light lasts a century, and when its light begins to dim a single Marai known as the Tide Caller makes a trade with a surface dweller for a new Moonstone. The current Tidecaller is Nami, who is also the only Marai to have ever explored the surface world.

** Another sea-dwelling race exists that holds some biological connection to Yordles. Fizz belongs to this race, but his appearance on the surface is due to the disappearance of his species. Not even Fizz knows where his people have gone.

* Minotaurs: Enormous humanoid bovines, the lived in great tribes within the Great Barrier and are quite noble and valorous in their ways. The Minotaurs have suffered greatly from the cruelty of the Noxian warmachine, with many of them having been enslaved and forced to fight as gladiators in the brutal Noxian event known as the Fleshing. Alistar, is a survivor of this game and seeks to protect his people from tyrannical dangers such as Noxus.

* Trolls: Grotesque, dim witted creatures that inhabit the Freljord. Most are blue-skinned and live in tribes. Lately, they have begun preparing for war, rallying under the banner of Trundle.

* Undead: Abominable creatures, created when the barrier between life and death is shattered and defiled. They predominantly reside in the Shadow Isles but their influence and manifestations have reached Valoran's shores over the past decades.

* Ursine: A race of Freljordian bears who are strong, honorable, and most notably stand upright. The Ursine lived in seculsion for many years before the reign of Volibear began. Thanks to a vision from the sacred storm the Ursine revere, Volibear was able to see a future where his kind were driven to extinction, and so roused his people from their complacency to prepare for war.

* Voidborn: Various seemingly intelligent entities who, for reasons beyond human understanding, have the desire to gain entrance to and vitiate the worlds outside their realm. They live in the Void, an alien realm of darkness. Their primary purpose is to consume, while the reason behind this varies from Voidborn to Voidborn.

* Yordles: Bipedal mammalian being of wide hair colors and small in stature. The Yordles live primarily within the Yordle Lands, and have good relations with human nations, in particular the nation of Piltover. Yordles are often credited for their intelligence, and have made great strides in the field of Techmaturgy. Males are more commonly covered in hair than females. Yordles evolved from immensely huge creatures of incredible ferocity and strength, before shrinking down and gaining greater intelligence with time.

* Unique beings also exist in the world, usually a product of some magical or unnatural phenomenon.Anivia, Golems of both Blitzcrank and Galio origin, Malphite, Maokai, Rammus, Wukong, Twitch, Viktor, Warwick, Zac, Spirits and more unknown races.

Ever the survivor, she gathered her remaining followers to venerate her and her departed sisters and gathered as much resources as they could to seal the Watchers. Lissandra and the first among her Frostguard did everything in their power to rewrite history, seizing all records of what had truly happened though they never fully succeeded.

The Great Darkin War
  +
When the light of Shurima finally left the world, many of the immortal Ascended found themselves lost. With no emperor to lead them, these “Darkin” eventually fell to warring among their own kind — and the peoples of Runeterra were caught in the middle. The ceaseless warring and the horrors they witnessed slowly took their toll, leading them to fight over who was worthy of taking over the world that forgot them. This started the War of the Sunborn, known better to the world as the Darkin War. After many years of their reign and continuous wars, the Darkin were finally destroyed or sealed inside their own weapons, but not without leaving the world in ruin.
<!-- (Not canon anymore due to League retcon.)The League of Legends recognizes settlements with substantial influence on Valoran as city-states. These nations are afforded a great deal of rights and protections within the League, such as being allotted one League Assembly chair. The chosen emissaries are entitled to reside at the Institute of War and cast votes in League Assemblies on their city-state's behalf. They may also appeal to the League for general arbitration of political affairs.

  +
The Iron Revenant
Any settlement can apply for membership in the League and ascend to city-state status. However, they must fill certain League requirements:

  +
Mordekaiser#Background
  +
By tricking a coven of sorcerers in his service and making them bind his spirit-form in dark metal plates wrought in the likeness of his old Indestructible, the brutal warlord Sahn-Uzal was brought back from the dead as Mordekaiser and thus began his second conquest of the mortal realm. As before, his ambitions were great, only now empowered by necromantic sorcery he could never have previously imagined. From the fearful, dissipating souls of the sorcerers, Mordekaiser forged a weapon fit for an emperor of death — his brutal mace, Obliterate — and seized control of the army they had raised.

  +
To his foes, it seemed he cared only for massacre and destruction. Entire generations perished under his relentless campaigns.
* The settlement's population must be of sufficient size.

* The settlement must have a defined governmental structure.

* The settlement must have a means to police itself.--->

  +
However, there was far more to Mordekaiser's plan. He raised the Immortal Bastion at the center of his empire; while most assumed it was merely a seat of power, some came to know the secrets it held. Mordekaiser hungered for all the forbidden knowledge of spirits and death, and a true understanding of the realm... or realms... beyond.
There are currently eleven nations (seven countries, two city-states and two nations with no main recognized governments), those are :

* Countries

** Bilgewater Union

** Empire of Noxus

** Empire of Shurima

** Ionia

** Kingdom of Demacia

** Kingdom of Freljord

** Yordle Land

* City-States

** Piltover

** Zaun

* No main recognized governments

** Mount Targon

** Shadow Isles

  +
Such tyranny could only bring him enemies. The Iron Revenant was defeated, surprisingly, by an alliance of the Noxii tribes, and LeBlanc from within his own inner circle. This hidden cabal managed to sever the anchors of his soul from his armor, and sealed the empty iron shell away in a secret place.
Religions
Religions in Valoran are largely varied in every nation but several have been known to gather the most of followers:

  +
And so, Mordekaiser was cast out of the material realm. However, unbeknownst to anyone, he had planned for this — indeed, it was a pivotal part of his design. Domination and deceit had carried him far, but he knew that a destiny far grander than the Hall of Bones awaited him.
* The Solari: The worship of the Sun. Solaric worship is largely made up by a special sect of Rakkorians who surrender their mantles of war in favor of greater solar devotion. Their founder and leader chose Mount Targon, being the highest peak closest to the Sun, and was blessed with the power to call down the sun's wrath. Currently, Leona, has taken this legend's regalia and fights to protect the helpless and the innocent.

* The Lunari: The worship of the Moon. Not much is known of this shadowed sect, apparently eradicated a long time ago, possibly by the Solari. The Lunari's rise may come to pass through the dark crusade waged by Diana and an outcast by the Solari themselves.

* The Frozen Watchers: Unknown and hidden, this religion schemes and bids their time in the dark fortresses of the once-pure Frostguard. Led by Lissandra, they plot the return to power of the overthrown Frozen Watchers. United under the Frozen Watchers, Freljord was brutal warmachine that boasted might and magic. Ironically, it was Avarosa's rebellion that divided Freljord into the war-torn wastes it is now.

  +
There, in the once empty wasteland, all those who had died under his latest reign were waiting. Perverted by dark sorcery, their spirits would never fade. The strongest became his devout, eternal army, bound to his will... but even the weak were given purpose.
Valoran also has a few cults:

  +
  +
From the subtle matter of their souls, Mordekaiser would forge a new empire. They would be the building blocks and mortar of his Afterworld.
  +
  +
The Rune Wars
  +
Centuries later, magical artifacts called 'World Runes' have been rediscovered after the destruction of the Blessed Isles. Over the following decades after such event, knowledge of the Runes began to spread as more were unearthed. The world's brightest minds studied the ancient glyphs, attempting to determine the powers they possessed. Few could even begin to understand the importance of their origins, or the sheer power held within them. Some surmised that the Runes were integral to the creation of Runeterra itself. The first use of these mysterious artifacts proved catastrophic, as they reshaped the landscape of entire nations. Mistrust quickly grew as those who knew of the Runes imagined such “Makers' Might” being used as a weapon. Conflicts later related to these magical artifacts were known as the "Rune Wars."
  +
  +
Open warfare raged across Runeterra. The first horrors of the Rune Wars sparked fear and aggression among those who now realized the power at their command. Ryze and his master, Tyrus, have sought out to lock away every World Rune beyond the reach of man for the protection of Runeterra. Some complied with their pleas, others dismissed them due to their newfound powers and influence. After an incident with Tyrus, Ryze continued his journey alone in gathering all Runic artifacts so as to prevent another Rune War from starting and possibly destroying the world.
  +
  +
The world seemed to be on the verge of destruction. Many people fled to the petricite forest to the west of the continent where the trees are rumored to be capable of dampening magic, while the Noxii tribes all hid inside the Immortal Bastion. Finally, after devastating casualties all over the world, the Wars ended.
  +
  +
Birth of the nations
  +
Demacia#HistoryNoxus#History
  +
New nations started rising. Some built on top of the ashes of the old ones, while others were founded by refugees of the wars.
  +
  +
As the Noxii tribes re-emerged from the Immortal Bastion, they became one and called themselves Noxus. Noxian capital, Noxus Prime, built on top of the derelict Immortal Bastion. This point marks the beginning of the Noxian calendar.
  +
  +
In the west, the young nation of Demacia was founded by the great champion Orlon.

Trivia
  +
  +
*The name of the video game known as Valorant, made by Riot Games, closely resembles the name of the fictional continent of Valoran from the Runeterra Prime universe and the location known as Valoran City from the Star Guardian universe of the League of Legends intellectual property.
  +
*As the map on universe is a rectilinear projection, places near the poles look bigger than they should in comparison to places near the equator. So Shurima looks about the same size as Valoran on the map, but that is misleading - it has a larger area.

* The Cult of the Spider has most of its followers located in Noxus and Demacia. The champion, Elise, serves as its High Priestess, traveling to and from between the two nations and the Shadow Isles, bringing her followers to live with the Spider God, Vilemaw, for eternity, or so they believe.

* The Cult of the Void is a cult that first began when League Champion, Malzahar, claimed that Runeterra will be ended by the Void. Many of its followers have surrendered themselves to this fate and simply do what is asked of them, including being used as a sacrifice to the Void. They are currently at war against an organization known as the Preservers, led by the enemy of the Cult's High Priest, Kassadin.

* The Glorious Evolution is led by Viktor, whose view of flesh is inferior to that of steel and metal, has gathered much followers among the people of Zaun and has spread among other nations. An amalgamation of flesh or the total replacement of it had marked his works, incorporating techmaturgy to purge the weakness and inefficiency of the flesh. For as long as they exist, the day of the world replaced by beings of weaponized steel and metal becomes clearer with each passing day.

Valoran is the northern continent of Runeterra. Valoran is connected to the now Shuriman Continent through a small artificial land bridge where modern day Piltover and Zaun are located, which was once the center location of the continent before the event that shattered the continent into two. While the most well-known regions of the continent are Demacia Crest icon Demacia, Noxus Crest icon Noxus and Freljord Crest icon Freljord, there are also hundreds of smaller states and nations that are not part of them.[1] Almost all nations and factions of present-day Runeterra are based on Valoran.

The Three Sisters

In an ancient primordial world long before advanced civilizations, the Three Sisters (Avarosa, Serylda and Lissandra Lissandra) were born. Each sought to harness the powers at war, and each paid a terrible price with one of their senses. After losing her sight to the primal god Volibear Volibear, Lissandra chose instead to walk in dreams. As she navigated the fitful visions of those around her, she realized only she could see the darkness below for what it was: the lingering abyss of the Void Crest icon Void promised not only an ending, but infinity. It was death, both dangerous and full of potential. Unknown to her sisters, Lissandra struck a deal on their behalf with the god-like entities she had communed with — the Watchers would grant them near-immortality in exchange for preparing Runeterra for the coming of the Void.

The three sisters and their most powerful followers were named Iceborn. Those with this ability to withstand the worst of the numbing frost would be spared until the very end.

Ever the survivor, she gathered her remaining followers to venerate her and her departed sisters and gathered as much resources as they could to seal the Watchers. Lissandra and the first among her Freljord Frostguard Frostguard did everything in their power to rewrite history, seizing all records of what had truly happened though they never fully succeeded.

The Great Darkin War

When the light of Shurima Crest icon Shurima finally left the world, many of the immortal Ascended found themselves lost.

The Iron Revenant

By tricking a coven of sorcerers in his service and making them bind his spirit-form in dark metal plates wrought in the likeness of his old armor armor, the brutal warlord Sahn-Uzal was brought back from the dead as Mordekaiser Mordekaiser and thus began his second conquest of the mortal realm. As before, his ambitions were great, only now empowered by necromantic sorcery he could never have previously imagined. From the fearful, dissipating souls of the sorcerers, Mordekaiser forged a weapon fit for an emperor of death — his brutal mace, Nightfall Nightfall — and seized control of the army they had raised.

To his foes, it seemed he cared only for massacre and destruction. Entire generations perished under his relentless campaigns.

However, there was far more to Mordekaiser's plan. He raised the Immortal Bastion at the center of his empire; while most assumed it was merely a seat of power, some came to know the secrets it held. Mordekaiser hungered for all the forbidden knowledge of spirits and death, and a true understanding of the realm... or realms... beyond.

Such tyranny could only bring him enemies. The Iron Revenant was defeated, surprisingly, by an alliance of the Noxii tribes, and betrayal betrayal from within his own inner circle. This hidden cabal managed to sever the anchors of his soul from his armor, and sealed the empty iron shell away in a secret place.

And so, Mordekaiser was cast out of the material realm. However, unbeknownst to anyone, he had planned for this — indeed, it was a pivotal part of his design. Domination and deceit had carried him far, but he knew that a destiny far grander than the Hall of Bones awaited him.

There, in the once empty wasteland, all those who had died under his latest reign were waiting. Perverted by dark sorcery, their spirits would never fade. The strongest became his devout, eternal army, bound to his will... but even the weak were given purpose.

From the subtle matter of their souls, Mordekaiser would forge a new empire. They would be the building blocks and mortar of his Afterworld.

The Rune Wars

Open warfare raged across Runeterra. The first horrors of the Rune Wars sparked fear and aggression among those who now realized the power at their command. Ryze Ryze and his master, Tyrus, have sought out to lock away every World Rune beyond the reach of man for the protection of Runeterra. Some complied with their pleas, others dismissed them due to their newfound powers and influence. After an incident with Tyrus, Ryze continued his journey alone in gathering all Runic artifacts so as to prevent another Rune War from starting and possibly destroying the world.

Birth of the nations

New nations started rising. Some built on top of the ashes of the old ones, while others were founded by refugees of the wars.

As the Noxii tribes re-emerged from the Immortal Bastion, they became one and called themselves Noxus Crest icon Noxus. Noxian capital, Noxus Prime, built on top of the derelict Immortal Bastion. This point marks the beginning of the Noxian calendar.

In the west, the young nation of Demacia Crest icon Demacia was founded by the great champion Orlon.

Trivia

 • The name of the video game known as Valorant, made by Riot Games, closely resembles the name of the fictional continent of Valoran from the Runeterra Map profileicon Runeterra Prime universe and the location known as Valoran City from the New Horizon profileicon Star Guardian universe of the League of Legends icon League of Legends intellectual property.
 • As the map on universe is a rectilinear projection, places near the poles look bigger than they should in comparison to places near the equator. So Shurima looks about the same size as Valoran on the map, but that is misleading - it has a larger area.[2]
